Doom 2 the Way id Did

About This File

Doom II The Way id Did is the long awaited sequel to 2011's Doom The Way id Did. It comprises 32 levels that endeavour to both look and play as though they've come from Dallas, 1994, from the very toiling hands of Sandy, John and American.

The idea was originally kicked about by Jason Root aka Hellbent, whose passion for the game and knack for growing enthusiasm resulted in one of the most successful community collaborations in Doomworld history – not to mention an impressive collection of more than 100 total submissions. While not quite as successful as the first project in this regard, painstaking lengths have been made by those involved to ensure that D2TWiD is as true a doppelganger of id's Doom 2 as it could ever be. And we hope that you agree! Enjoy!

While I didn't see that much of a resemblance of the style of the original levels, I did enjoy playing through the wad. The design was neat and the gameplay was fun.

It's right up my alley - Vanilla compat, use of stock textures, clever layouts. I like it. I think the only question I have afterwards is, why are other similar vanilla megawads not just as popular? Oh well, the world is a crazy place, I love good vanilla stuff, so good job!

Seems to be one of those games where you look at things and push a button to make them fall over. It can get dull after a while, but as an example of the genre this is pretty good.

First 25 levels are amazing. Not so last 5. And the secret level was amusing for about 30 seconds. That's how long it took for novelty to wear off. Still, worth 5 stars for the parts that were good.

Does a better job of mimicry than the original DTWID and despite this is does not feel old hat. It seems D2 style maps are rarer than you might think and this megawad might convince you that modern mapping sensibilities might have left something special behind as design has evolved.

You can clearly see how the original mappers' styles are imitated, but this isn't a nostalgic rehash. Rather, these maps reminded me of what I like about Doom. It's great to play a wad in a cleaner, simpler style that doesn't rely on setpieces and highly choreographed battles, instead giving you room to breathe and often letting monsters wander, with the architecture and enemy placement still providing challenge. D2TWID is a strong reminder that the #1 ingredient in making an interesting map is layout.

I'm just not buying into the mass appeal that it seems to generate. I think it kind of pales in comparison to the original, not that it was meant to surpass that. So in all, it's okay.

Probably the best release for 2013. Nothing beats a purely classic megawad. This is really what Doom is all about, getting keys, killing monsters, finding secrets and solving puzzles, no new music or GFX in the main maps. So much thought has been put into this. D2twid does what its intended to do and that intention is to recreate Doom 2 all over again in the style of Romero, Petersen and McGee.

I was disappointed with the Romero maps, except for map 29 which is great. I find that the Romero maps work well as individuals maps, but when played back to back in the wad they blend together & loose their unique identity. The McGee maps were average & not as good as their Doom 2 counterparts, my favorites here being map 2 & 4. The real standout maps are the ones in Sandy Petersen's style. Except for maps 28, 9, 27, & 1 I found all the Sandy maps to be good.

These levels are better than the originals. Id software's maps were lazily thrown together in Doom 2. These are well textured and play fantastic under any port. 5 stars.

Wouldn't exactly call this a successful endeavor. Most maps feel like uncertain and uncomfortable mishmashes of duct-taped ideas. Not Doom2, the way id did. That's for sure.

^It's hard for one to do Doom 2 how ID did it, because of the common saying, 'Doom 2 sucks'. This wad, on the other hand, doesn't.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
