About This File

An abandoned space colony on Phoebe, one of the Jupiter's moons.

This map is taken from the sixth Russian Doom Community "tuning contest", where participants had to improve a computer generated map while keeping the original layout intact. I've modified it a little since then, so it should work under PrBoom+ instead of ZDoom.

Great map with an intricate layout that rarely gets confusing. I really enjoyed the look of it, especially the blue carpet. Generally it features a ton of custom resources that fit well together and make for a coherent total. Gameplay wise there is nothing to complain about, except maybe that ammo is getting a bit tight in places. I liked the idea with the space suits, as well as the "clear glass" textures, heh.

you have the atmospheric title screen and music to get you started, then the senses come in as soon as you start the map. it's certified to have that feeling of dread, on a derelict techbase overrun by monsters. there were a few texture errors and the gameplay has it rough on ammo (a real slow-pacer if anything). at least the sense of level flow works out well enough that there weren't any real issues. it's worth a go.

When rating a wad, one should judge different aspects, and then compute the balanced average. So: map layout is ok but not special: 3/5. Texture use: 3.5/5. Ambiance: 4/5. Gameplay: unbalanced monster/ammo, monster placement looks quite uninspired and often cheap, gameplay path is not quite exciting to say the least, never got me on my toes and even made me difficult to play it out before being too bored: 1.5/5. Summary: decoration-over-game play map with good looks, but not at all inviting for a 2nd run.

The overall map design is quite decent. But one thing makes this map unpleasant to play, and it is the lack of ammo. I highly recommend that you'll add few more shell and ammo boxes here and there. Had to gave ammo from the console 2 times.

A superbly atmospheric map with grandiose architecture. Some familiar textures have new life. I like the music and although ammo is scarce at times it just makes me play differently. You don't have to kill everything. In other respects gameplay is reassuringly conventional, which is good because that's why we come here, right? The new monster type and weapon sounds weren't necessary but they aren't offensive or out of place either.

For some reason I expected less after reading the description, but this map is actually really cool. It has a nice grey-blue aesthetic, and makes good use of Equinox resources. I did get frustrated at a point where I literally ran out of ammo for every weapon though, and had to run past an arch-vile and face a couple of arachnotrons to get the yellow key. I probably missed a secret ammo stash somewhere. Overall though, pretty darn good.

Very nice map, good length, and excellent choice in terms of colors. The mid-blue tones mix well with the space-lab style of mapping, and the lighting was great. Challenge-wise, not too hard. A lot of traps I'm familiar with, but, still had me excited for each switch and corner. 5-5 K12

I question the choice of music but the level is legendary.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
