DOOM 2 - Flashback to Hell

About This File

A 15-level mapset for DOOM 2 that is compatible with the "-complevel 9" setting. Features new music by PRIMEVAL and James Paddock, as well as high-quality redone sound effects by Per Kristian Risvik. If the new music tracks are buggy in ZDOOM while using FMOD, updating to the latest non-official revision might fix the problem. I recommend using Fluidsynth, though.

Each level of this wad has been balanced for pistol-start play. In addition, this mapset has been specially balanced to allow for co-op play, using 2-4 players. In co-operative play, the maps will be teeming with LOTS more monsters than in single-player, but ammo and health pickups will be increased as well.

PrBoom-Plus users will see a new set of demos. Please do not use freelook, crouch, or jump. These features will either break the levels or will lessen the old-school feel.

4.5 stars, the Doom 2 tributes were a-ok while the last maps are what stood out the most.

I rarely give out 5/5 ratings but this was top notch. Good classic feel. A lot of the levels were recognizable from the original Doom 2 levels without being too copy-cat. Level 12 was my favorite. Very sinister. Good attention to detail plus fun to play. Loved the music too. Nice job.

Very solid set of maps. Many of them keep the feel of original maps enough but to be overly familiar. Nice textures, good music choice. Just short of greatness. 4 stars. -TRRobin.

Great, great set of classical maps. If you expect flashy graphics or insane difficulty of many modern wads... well, you wont find that here. However, if you are in a mood for some old school, nostalgic Doom fun, do yourself a favor and download this baby. I enjoyed every damn moment of it. Well earned 5/5

Pretty good. The Doom2 tribute maps are nothing new but still fun to play, and the final hell maps are absolutely gorgeous. Best wad of 2014 so far imo -

I tried really hard to give it a 3, but tarnsman won the argument. It just consistently did nothing to move me in any way, yet I really wanted it to. fuuuuck it -- 2

I didn't think this would ever see the light of day. I am pleased to say that the wait was totally worth it, the new music is great, the level design is fantastic and the game play is spot on. A definite 2014 cacoward winner.

I'm a big fan of this mapset, it's an exciting joy to play and it still keeps the right "Doom feel" (as I see it). I'm also going to support this for a Cacoward.

A pretty darn good WAD indeed. Nice semi linear maps, good atmosphere and classic gameplay, realism and happy to know that there is some excellent original music by Jimmy, PRIMEVAL and Rich Nagel. A nice surprise with MAP31 and MAP32. Get it now!

I can agree with some of the above reviewer's critiques. However, "easy" is a relative term. Modern DOOMers are a lot more skilled and are using smooth source ports on faster computers with better peripheral support than they were in 1994. I think this wad was more meant as a throwback, and that "easy" difficulty was a conscious decision. Also, this wad gives the player weaponry at the same pace as the iwad, so saying you lacked heavy weaponry seems odd.

I found the design pretty decent and nicely polished, without any ugly spots (just some misalignments). The gameplay, however, wasn't very good. It was always pretty easy apart from a few low ammo moments, sometimes fun (blasting everything and feeling good) but often pretty tedious, with lots of monsters to dispose of and not much heavy weaponry. Not enough interesting situations, many door fights (open a door, kill stuff without entering the room). Hope to see more from this author with better gameplay.

Great visuals, pretty good gameplay overall but some fights and layout design need some work, and the use of pain elementals in the last few maps reeeeeally annoyed me. Also a bit of door fighting going on. Give it a try, you might like it, but it's a solid 4 stars.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
