About This File

High in a distant Mountain Range nestled among the cliffs lies the Asmod Monk Sanctuary. Legends abound of this sect and how these monks dabbled in the black arts. It has been many years since the remaining monks abandoned their abode and returned to the outside world leaving behind the remnants of their trade. Now in the midst of the chaos and turmoil in the world, the sanctuary is once again lit up and the howls and groans of the many demons can be heard throughout the mounatin range. History states that once inside this castle of darkness, the only way out is to procure the 6 Keys of the Asmod Monks and make good your escape. And history also states you MUST have all 6 keys. 3 Keys won't do!

The fifth Odessa map is a step up in architecture, lighting, and combat encounters. Unfortunately, it's a huge step back in logical level progression. This map will drive most of its players to quit in frustration, or at the very least to noclip. Most of the switches are behind unmarked secrets, to the point where the actual secrets are easier to find. I don't usually like spoiling maps, but since this map wasted about an hour of my life: the alcove with the lowering crate actually has an unmarked door on the right that leads to the yellow skull key. You will need to find the red keycard first to get the blue skull key; the earlier red key door in the elevator hub is just a red herring.

I can't call it a good map (quite lame fights and obscure progression), but it has a few pretty/charming and also intriguing parts. A crusher with a sector tag 22 can trap you forever, I think, if you stop it in a wrong moment.

rather than comment on all the odessa wads, commenting here. 4 stars for layout, graphics, lighting, and monster placement. 1 star for unrelenting switch hunting( might be a preference for some). similar comment elsewhere " wads aren't that big, you just have to keep backtracking". true, and tiring. quit after playing the 1st 4 wads.

I absolutely hated all the annoying puzzles. Especially the "pull the wood texture" one that can only be discovered by inspecting the map in Doom Builder. Vomit.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
