Nebula 95: Drown Stone Cassette B

About This File

Fourth entry in a series of small vanilla doom maps in a space adventure built off personal nostalgia. Each entry consists of a two short maps: an introductory monsterless map with a single secret to find before tackling the mission, and the main map itself. I release them in the order they are made, but the difficulty depends on the map. Drown Stone Cassette A (just Drown Stone) is based on my submission for Snakes' Secret Santa project, in which I was tasked at imitating Forty-Two/stewboy's style. I originally planned on using this map as part of the Nebula 95 series, but I realized toward the end of making it that it didn't quite fit for a few reasons: it was boom-compatible, and it used new non-sky textures in the map, which sort of went against the style I had in mind for this series. I liked it too much the way it was though, so I released this version to the archive as Dstone.wad. For the second version (the one you're looking at), the resources were changed and it was optimized to be vanilla-compatible, which meant making changes to the architecture and gameplay of the map. If you want to play a more direct action-oriented styled map, try out DStone.wad. If you want to play a slightly more puzzle-oriented cheesy nineties version of the map, give this one a go.

Is a short and cool puzzle map that strongly resembles 90s maps in style, i've enjoyed playing it quite a lot!

there's not too much in the way of puzzles in this short offering. it's pretty decent if a bit cramped. last trap is pretty harsh too.

This short mapset isn't so bad as other people said(it depends on taste, anyway). Yeah, it has some flaws, but I enjoyed main atmosphere and puzzles.

I'm surprised at the lukewarm reception this map got, it's a rather solid (if unconventional) affair that I enjoyed quite a lot. Plenty of challenge and trickery without being too grueling in the former or obtuse in the latter, just the way I like it. Cool stuff!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
