Flay the Obscene - Reversed

About This File

This map is a revamp of the original Flay the Obscene, which was released in 1999. As a 15 year anniversary celebration of the map -which was the first big noticeable release from me- I have decided to dust it off and dress it up.

I could have called it "Flay the Obscene 4", since I considder it to be a fourth entry in the series, as it plays, and looks, quite different from the original one. This is mostly because it is played backwards, but also because there are new areas added to it, and a ton of updates in both terms of gameplay and architecture! But I have left out the "4" from the title but kept it in the filename as I want to emphasize the fact, that it is "simply" the first entry, which has been reversed. But why even considder the "4" then? Because, I think I want to create a fifth entry that sees the player tackle his homeworld, which has been... erhm, on second thought, we'd better leave that part out ;)

Since the map has been reversed, you will probably find the old start area of the map, which is now the end, somewhat cramped. There was a challenge to make that interesting, so instead of having the level end with an empty intro level - which has btw been merged into the main level - you will get to fight in that one too in order to give the entire level an interesting end. Confusing I know, so don't spend too long thinking about it. Just go and kick some ass and have some fun! :)

PS: !Minor spoiler! I guess you can avoid the final fight and just head for the exit. But can you really live with the shame of being a coward?

beautiful but really damn hard especially the battle with the cyberdemon also had to clip to get to the second part of the map which is where the cyberdemon is I saw where the door had opened but couldn't get to it and since jumping had been disabled I wasn't able to jump over there. Overall this was fun though

Fantastic level by Chris Hansen, a master of old-school mapping. Great detail and texture usage without being obstructive or hindering gameplay, good re-use of space, good flow, great battles and traps, and a lot of original ideas put to good use here. If you like high-quality DOOM pwads, you'll want to check this one out. 5 stars!

The problem is with Brutal Doom, not the map. Don't give the map a bad rating because you used a mod that cocks up the gameplay. In any event, it's a Chris Hansen map and it's based on a Doomworld Top 100 wad he did so this is legendary, mint quality stuff. Download it now.

Actually Flay The Obscene DID NOT get in the top 100 (/10years) as he wasn't as careful with the overall balance in the original Flay maps, despite plenty of great architecture. OTOH this is definitely the best Flay map he made even if it isn't entirely new and not quite as extensive as Flay 3 was. I think he's become a bit more consistent with gameplay since the original Flay maps (some of his older stuff like CH Retro DOES play very well, but others are iffy).

Impressive design and gameplay fits together really well here. Tenseful and atmospheric at parts, but flowing like the Doom we like, and appropriately challenging for an enjoyable game. That's why I give 5 stars.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
