Quality is much lower than the 2012 edition.  There are lots of jokewads or poorly balanced levels (missing ammo or health).  A couple of maps were interesting as mentioned by a previous reviewer.

Maps of interest: 9, 14, 15, 21 in the limit-removing pack; 8, 10 in the Boom pack; none in the ZDoom pack.

and this is why i have very low faith for modern mapsets. yes i made one (MAP03 of the limit-removing set) but looking at everything, i see, cool maps, okay maps, too ambitious maps, and joke maps. Limit-removing set was okay except for MAP18's horrible flow. Boom set was absolute shit after MAP03 and before MAP08. and the ZDoom set was just ridiculously over-the-top fucked up.

Not all the maps were good. But because I that the most of the maps made by new builders I gave 5/5.

I give this 4 out of 5 stars. It certainly is not perfect; there are a few clunkers (mainly uninteresting "joke" levels, 'meh' levels, and so forth.) HOWEVER, there are a lot of real treasures (such as the maps from: Matt534dog, Obsidian, The_Trigger, Netherstorm, and MrtheJoshmon, among others. Not all of the joke levels are bad, either. Take Kate Stone's, for example. I will warn that the last level is very, VERY R-rated.

Most of the maps are not so good, but there are gems here and there. Generally they are the maps by the more well-known authors (although some decided to make joke maps). I think the ZDoom wad has the fewest good maps (and I'm sorry to say, Map01 is a total chore), although The Trigger's map is pretty good, as is Eradrop's assuming it's the bug fixed version. It's a big download, and not a huge number of good levels, but I wouldn't call it a complete waste, either - there is some cherry picking to do.

FOA: respect for the effort. Having said that, modern mapsets tend to prioritize monster count far above subtlety. IOW: obviously a map can be made harder by putting in more monsters, but that does not automatically make gameplay more attractive. IMHO usually the opposite happens. Also with these maps: again IMHO a few are good, but most of the maps have gameplay which simply do not give any fun, so overall 2/5. BTW please, PLEASE don't give your own maps 5*, it's foul play and misleading.

      I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

      Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason.       A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

      Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

      I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
