About This File

Brutalist Doom is a WAD that retextures Doom to a have a Brutalist architecture. From Wikipedia:

"Brutalist architecture is a movement in architecture that flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, descended from the modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century. Brutalism became popular with governmental and institutional clients. Examples are typically massive in character (even when not large), fortress-like, with a predominance of exposed concrete construction."

Critics of the style have described it as "cold-hearted", "inhuman", "hideous", and "monstrous", and for projecting an atmosphere of totalitarianism and urban decay. Brutalist Doom recreates this atmosphere, primarily through the use of a replacement TEXTURE1 resource, but also with a custom dehacked patch, texture replacements and a custom palette.

This mod is freakin' hilarious in that in makes Doom so bland and boring. That's how it got a Cacoward... because it was a "Mockaward". The palette itself is quite pretty... I saw someone use the palette itself from here and it looks amazing on many maps...

The joke is well executed, but it's not any fun to actually play.

One could say it is easier to focus on bare geometry and architecture of the maps with this mod on since there are not so many distractions. The absence of music was also a brilliant idea. Some problems were present, such as some lifts and doors being indistinguishable from the surroundings (take a look at "The Pit" for example) and locked doors/bars (red, blue, yellow) cannot be distinguished by the hinges anymore since everything is bleak gray.

Perfectly accomplishes what it sets out to do. While it's not actual Brutalist architecture, it conveys a sense of totalitarian hopelessness with the utmost tact. It's absolutely boring, repetitive, and perhaps what Hell is actually like. Also, the Icon of Sin is fucking hilarious.

For all the work put in you would've been better off just making a txt and png file, the wad is a joke that lasts a few seconds and is put in the recycling bin right afterwards. You could've at least removed the bunnies from the endscreen like it says in the story.

1 star for "haha funneh conzept". I understand this is a joke wad, but it must be noted that sandy pedersen's brown on brown on greyish-brown bland level design is already more brutalist than brutal can brut.

I'm giving this one a 4/5 as I have always loved Brutalist architecture. That said, it's nothing more than regular DooM with a Brutalist theme. So...don't go around expecting Deus Vult; you will be disappointed. It's just a gimmick; nothing more.

I guess this is technically a jokewad, but it's the best sort of jokewad. It has something specific in mind, and it doesn't waste time getting to the payoff. It's as well-executed technically as you could hope for. The text file is also surprisingly urbane and almost makes you think that there's some deeper meaning to it. I also like to imagine that the author only made it in order to make a pun on "Brutal Doom", which makes the whole enterprise even better.

That's an interesting idea but sadly it does not do what it tries to do probably because there's no real "architecture" in Doom and it's not that monotonous (i.e. google "Habitat 67"). Textures themselves are questionable too. Palette is nice and very bland (exactly how it should be). Concept is strong and you can cook a nice depressing wad from it.

5 stars because it would be awesome if people wanting to download Brutal Doom were mistakenly directed to this instead.

5 stars for being the only WAD in the idgames archive with a text file that uses the word "Kafkaesque". Well done.

I really like the idea, but maybe it could've used more kinds of (grey) textures.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
