About This File

The idea was to remake a map from one episode, but as if it had appeared in another episode.

A completelly underrated and some kind of hidden gem for sure.
Switcheroon really nails the DTWID aesthetic, and make it far better even.
The maps are unmistakeable the original, but adapted to be on a different map slot and episode.
Is not only a retexturing, not at all.
The maps are adapted on difficulty, progress, and even fix some of the problems of the original maps to make them far more enjoyable.

All the episodes are a joy.
And there are some incredible highlights here, especially most of Travers Dunne's maps. The man really knew what he was doing, and his renditions are just amazing from the get go.
E1 starts with his rendition of E3M1, on tech base style. And man, even when you may remember the map like the palm of your hand, he make it feel new and different.

The whole mapset is a constant deja vu for the good. There are not only new renditions of the maps, but also, some maps have combinations of the maps of the slot they are replacing.
For example, E4M7 is a rendition of E2M7 on TFC style, but there are some sprinkles here and there of the mapping style of John Anderson, and realising that is just awe inspiring and brilliant choice of design.
As for what i can tell, every map has this kind of throwback that make them just fabulous.

There are some kinda dickish maps, like E4M5, a rendition of E3M5 that has you on the fry all the time thanks to the damaging floor, or E4M6 a rendition of E2M6 that is just too dark on some areas to be enjoyable.
But aside from those two, the whole mapsets is an amazing ride from start to finish.

Thanks all the team, this is a wonderful work that deserves more recognition for sure.

I highly recommend this mapset to anyone that enjoy Ultimate Doom mapsets, and to those people that love classic style of mapping.

Very fun to play, even with the quasi-familiarity of the maps.

A lot of effort went into this wad. A good OS romp!

I Don't see many Doom episodes being made, so I'm very happy when I come across a megawad with 4 episodes, thx like it so far, hope you come up with a new project someday!

It's happening rarely enough that WADs for the first Doom are still created, so this project already deserves praises just for that. What you get is a full megawad with levels that occasionally seem to be little more than retexturing efforts, but when different styles or architectures get mixed, things get interesting. It's quite easy in general, so unless you are a total noob, don't pick any difficulty below UV. If you liked the original levels, you are going to enjoy this. I definitely did.

Pretty much agree with everyone else here. Decent classic ultimate doom fun here. Some level do not push the boundaries enough so 4 stars from me.

Really like it. Some maps are almost exact copies, though, whereas some other ones are way more liberal with the design. All in all, a good set to play in my opinion.

@^: giving 0* for a project like this is lame. Having said that, it's E123 clone #290745. Now a good clone does have a lot of additional value, but these levels have overall simple layout, are poorly decorated, have mostly yawning ambiance, and gameplay sadly doesn't work at all: playing it @ UV just didn't give fun. Therefore overall: meh + 1 for the amount of work + 1* compensation of above = 4/5.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
