About This File

Power Metal - Because it's less Heavy than Black Metal.

Power Metal is a large level for Doom 2 dedicated for single player and cooperative play in limit removing source-ports with classic settings in mind. It has nearly 1000 monsters and can take about 1 hour to beat on Ultra-Violence.

Power Metal uses Freedoom textures for better ambiance. Freedoom license file should be included within the archive in which this WAD comes in and it's also incorporated into the .WAD file itself. You can open the .WAD file and view the license with WAD editing program such as SLADE.

Jumping and crouching must be disabled for this map or else players may be able to skip certain areas and break the intended gameplay. A MAPINFO lump has been incorporated for ZDoom-based source-ports that enforces these rules. In my opinion there are also no areas where freelook would be necessary and I prefer to play without it wherever possible, but that's up to you.

Difficulty levels are implemented in a way that easy difficulties disable large portion of enemies, while "Hurt me plenty" only disables a few of them that I thought could be decisive to player's approach to health and ammo conservation.

Impressive actually. It's okay IMO to up the difficulty a lot. I had fun destroying the demons (and dying) :)

Technically quite good, but on places way too repetitive or just to simple architecture, and the gameplay is much too repetitive and leans way too much on snipers and slaughtery monster overdoses, which makes playing the adventure quickly just unattractive. 4* for the map + 1* for the gameplay makes small 3*. If this level would have been cut in half, and gets smart and varying gameplay instead of gameplay based on an overdosis monsters, I would have given solid 4*.

wide open areas, often cnp-design... too much time-consuming to get to situations which are entertaining, not good not bad

Average design that reminds of early 2000s, and gameplay is an unrepentant grind in HR2's worst traditions. Monsters are just randomly thrown in bunches everywhere and don't serve any real parpose whatsoever.

The new sprites seem out of place, they just don't fit. Didn't finish the map as it was too repetitive over time and monster placement felt random most of the time, like they weren't used strategically but just tossed into the rooms. Reminds me of my first Doom2 maps.

Huge, hard level. Has solid squads of revenants, barons and arachnotrons even from start! Despite this, gameplay is very balanced, there are always some ammo and health somewhere in the crannies. Freedoom textures suit good with original Doom monsters, the level is well-detailed. I give Power Metal five stars with no doubt.

Massive map. I haven't beat it but I've saved partway through. The beginning bit was a little repetitive visually but the rest of the map looks stellar. Had trouble on UV, but it seems as though difficulty levels are implemented because I am finding it a little easier on HMP. Overall fun stuff, definitely will try this in a cooperative server.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
