About This File

You are a low level security guard assigned to guard the entrance of a large, secret UAC research base. Over the radio you hear some cries for help from one of your buddies. Apparently, high level security guards have seized the base in an attempt to keep anything coming through the teleporters from escaping, and as a bonus, they've killed all the low level staff stationed at Reception. Looks like you're the only one who can stop these mutinous guards from getting away with this. Maybe you can also find out what they were trying to keep out...

In many ways, the visual design is rudimentary -- common are misalignments, cutoffs, and ugly joins between two distinct textures or flats. The aesthetics aren't woeful, though; attention to theme- and setting-building, as well as narrative detailing, kept some of my interest. The music choices are good.

Gameplay is easygoing and bloody. Tough fights are used sparingly, like seasoning. The author is good at using monsters in ways that pose little threat but are still fun to fight. The opening map sets the tone -- mixed squadrons of zombies to be mowed down with the shotgun and chaingun. While the other maps rely more on traditional mixed-species fights, they keep a similar spirit. A lot of my enjoyment came from my ability to maintain a maniacally blitzing pace while riling up chaos, manufacturing my own trouble, and generally being hyperactive.

Conveyance was occasionally an issue. Once in a while, I'd press a dead-end switch and be left unsure what it could have possibly done. The first two maps were short enough to just press everything and hope it worked out, but map03 had an irritatingly convoluted method to lower its exit bars. Since I'd done everything else, I skipped to the next map after consulting the editor. (I had suspected the map was broken.)

And outright brokenness could not be ruled out. The text file says that no advanced ports are needed -- a determination made by guessing. prBoom+ fails to run due to a texture error, so this is a Z-compatible wad.

I mostly liked this, but the conveyance disaster was hard to be remotely soft on. It directly undercuts what I enjoyed about the set.

I don't see why someone would rate this 2 stars. Its much better then that. Overall this wad is pretty good, though it did have some issues. Some textures where missing where you can obtain the red keycard. But other then that, good. Music is also pretty good as well. Hope to see more wads from you in the future.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
