About This File

Here's my very first complete original level ever. It's episode 2 level 1. It was created using DEU 5.0, and the bsp11x nodes-builder. It has only had a few hours of play-testing. These days I think deathmatch is the only game to play, and I think this level is a lot of fun in a deathmatch.

This is one of the first ten or so levels in the database. It's surprisingly good; the detailing and textures are consistent and no worse than most maps from two years later, the layout is imaginative and its major sin is that there are only a handful of monsters. The secrets are too subtle, although you don't need the extra weapons and health (one of the secrets is inaccessible). This is light-years ahead of most other early wads, it even has working triggers.

I give it a 5 considering it's from 1994 AND file number 24 on the archive. ~Joe Anderson

A fine professional-looking WAD, its only flaw is the low monster count. 100% secrets is no problem. all secrets are accessible. - N_A

Lack of enemies is not the only flaw in this map, also the marble pillar the rocket launcher is on, if you rise it when it goes back up you become trapped. Other than these two problems however I agree with the previous reviewers. It has sleek design with the spiral in one of the rooms (hence the name) and makes for a fun wad even though it's short and lacking a lot of monsters 3/5. Average but good, try it out and see for yourself.

Very good for such an early level.

^I agree. It's good, for one of the earliest 1994 levels. Consistent theme inside each room, even though randomly different among rooms. Shame for all the Wolfenstein-style unobvious secrets. Lack of enemies is no big problem, at least the map flows comfortably.

e2m1, compared to the original doom and what was already possible at this time this is not good, but it's not a bad map

5*??? Excuse me, but the amount of flaws is way too large for that, even for an early '94 level. I do have a lot of levels from that time which do have much better gameplay - and do not have all the flaws this level does have, such as numerous texture misalignments and secrets which forces the player to test every wall. IOW @ ^2: not at all professional. Rated for that time: at most small 3/5.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
