CROSSING ACHERON 2.2

About This File

CROSSING ACHERON is the second level in the INFERNO series. Having passed through DANTE'S GATE and survived, you now find yourself in a keep on the shores of the river Acheron. This is the second leg of the journey in your search for Beatrice. Your guide, Virgil, is nowhere to be found. "He's buggered off!" you think to yourself; but you have no time now to even think: you are immediately challenged by several Demons, and in the distance you hear the eerie purring of the Arch-Vile (just be sure not to stare at him for too long before you start running.) As usual, you dispatch what fiends you may and begin the task at hand.

Your goal? To get the hell out of this place as quickly as possible and find your beloved Beatrice. You only hope that she has already passed through this hell-hole to a safer haven beyond. If only you could hold her in your arms again, you know what you would say:

"Gimme some sugar, Babe."

CROSSING ACHERON (pronounced 'ak eron) is the second level in a series that began with DANTE'S GATE. For any of the two or three of you out there who have read Dante Alighieri's masterwork THE DIVINE COMEDY -- or even only "Inferno" -- I'm sure you've been able to appreciate the many allusions to this work in DOOM. I have tried to take a tack of my own along the same lines. (I do this not only because I think the idea is neat, but so that people will think that I'm very clever.) I'm not so naïve as to expect everyone to rush out and get a copy of "Inferno" (I mean, it IS pretty tedious stuff, at times), but it's well worth the read -- and a little patience is a virtue that is often well-rewarded.

(By the way: Acheron is a river in Hell (basically). But don't look for any rivers in here: I tried it several different ways and just wasn't convinced.)

Thanks. Hope you like it.

Second in the Inferno series, I like the castle theme, cool lighting and that lovely sky. Too easy now. It was one of the first wads I played. It's a classic.

Liked it. I was surprised by how atmospheric the map was given its age, and it reminded me a bit of Virgil from the Master Levels, also by Anderson. As I suppose was to be expected, gameplay here is very easy, and health and ammo are given out very generously, but it's all engaging enough to avoid boredom. Good stuff.

Pretty good map but should have been placed on episode 2 or 3 to match the sky with the map's atmosphere.

I do like the abundance of hidden rooms and secret passages. I don't think the Doom 2 monsters are used very well (I think the mapper didn't have much experience with them yet), and the abundant ammo and powerups mean that even on UV the gameplay is rather trivial.

John "Dr. Sleep" Anderson has given us another great map with Crossing Acheron. Item placement is pretty good for the most part, and enemy placement is decent except for some Chaingunners hidden behind fake walls which I thought were a bit cheap. Still, the map is fun to play and has plenty of secrets to discover. Texture usage may be boring in some areas, but the lighting is pretty good and the map is generally pleasing to look at. A solid map from a good mapper. 4/5 -Reckoner

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
