About This File

Well, this is a very impressive episode including 9 _excellent_ levels. All the levels in this episode were created by myself, excluding e1m5, which was designed by a friend. We feel that any DOOM fanatic will enjoy this episode and will be completely impressed by the work put into it.

Well obviously its quite easy but it is an absolute classic! This is still, even today, one of the top E1 retro wads IMO, and it could have easily been made by ID software; in fact, it practically looks as if it was.

Silly name but it's a timeless classic. Belongs on every Doomers hard drive.

The first in the seires of "Knee-deep" imitations by many authors. It pretty much paved the way for episodes like "Dawn of the dead", "Ch retro episode", "Simply phobos" etc. In '95 this was a "state of the art" architecure, and even today it's not without it's merit, though it is a bit too easy, and bit plain today. It just shows how far did the doom mapping go, after all these years. Recommended for all lovers of episode 1.

This literally has got every little detail of E1's style right, short underpopulated maps, lower level monsters throughout, lower level weapons and just enough ammo to survive, low difficulty, simple map layout, and plenty of STARTAN and the like. I think this deserves more than its current 4 star rating simply because it has unanimously succeeded where many others have tried too hard.

Author congratulates himself, so what. Not going to harp there. Layouts and architecture are quite high standards for 1995. Unfortunately, it is _really_ trivially easy. I don't even think the original was this easy. Which means by modern standards, it sinks deeper than the rest in the sea of E1 replacements. 4/5 for the age but I'd really recommend something like CH Retro Episode over this if you're looking for the same overall type of flavor.

Excellent wad, prolly one of the best in 1995. And it's still much better than most mappers have to offer nowadays. Gameplay is surely on the easy side, but it's very close to the "Id gameplay" because it's highly playable even in Nightmare! skill (like Doom and Doom2 are) Most wads released nowadays are incompatible with Nightmare! skill :( high replayability, fun, a huge classic 5/5 - PerOxyd

Very good for it's time, the challenge of the wad could have been a bit more as this was far too easy. Layout wise it makes even newer wads looks bad with it's interconnectivity and use of height variation. 4 stars

Good stuff, thanks for this. The readme made me cringe, though. There's being proud of your work then there's being arrogant =)

For an older PWAD, this is quite fun in terms of gameplay. Design is above average but not overdone like some modern PWADs are. 4/5

This is a levelset that everyone should play at least once.

Excellent mapset for its time. Mostly quite easy, although I did find myself actually needing some of the health in E1M6 and E1M7 - seems to me that pistol starts would make this a decent challenge sooner. Great to explore and could easily be an official levelset. Loved it! 5*

4/5 It might as well be Knee Deep in the Dead, for all I care. Well, not E1M8. I'll keep my Phobos Anomaly, thank you. It's really easy, but then again I just came off playing Plutonia on UV, so you be the judge. My only gripes are the super short secret level and the finale. I enjoyed the little cameos of E1 architecture! -KMX E XII

Let me just echo what is about five comments above: it's a wad you should play once. It's tainted with problems, but it's a classic, it isn't horrible, and it puts the vast majority of other stuff through mid-1995 to shame. Sure we had the Serenity trilogy and the TIC wads by then, but acceptable Doom I episodes were still on the tough side to come by, and this is one of them. I don't know what to say at recent comments other than anything below 3/5 is an undeserved disrespect to the classic status.

This was very fun to play. It's simplistic yet atmospheric. The last map was pretty anti-climatic though.

Great for relaxing times. Not hard not baby just straight. Don't collect everything that's the idea. The levels are highly compact, smaller than kneedeepinthedead, but good enough. Only duds are e1m8,e1m9. But good for playing, damn good, so 4. -E

This is a decent pack for its time, but I do not agree with the reviews that it is unparalleled. There are plenty of better packs released in 1994, including SUDTIC and TEUTIC. My biggest complaint is the over-abundance of ammo. I used a mod that cut the amount of ammo given in half, and still maxed out every weapon. I don't care how bad of a shot someone is; you would never need that much ammo. It isn't fun when you can win using just rockets and plasma. The maps also get repetitive after a while. 3/5

Hi, I designed Fava Beans. Now-and-then I search the net and find new posts about the epsiode. I'm flattered by how popular it turned out over the years. One comment I see repeatedly is that the levels were too easy. There is a reason: I focused on the architecture and deathmatch playability, not on one-player gameplay. I added sprites only as the last step before level release. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the difficulty! Glad to see people enjoyed the levels anyway. Cheers.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
