About This File

Night has finally fallen, and all Hell has broken loose! You wake up in a pool of blood watching your buddy get tortured... You'll put an end to that! Watch out as you go outside, and collect everything needed to open the last door that leads to a safe place to wait for sunrise. Some doors are opened by a switches, test out the machine near the end, and save often! The temple of demons is a good place to save as well.

Sorry, this is rubbish. Author had grandiose plans without the talent or skills to deliver - K.I.S.S.

Holy crap, I finished it, it suffers from switchhunts a little, but there are some good ideas and atmosphere in here. Some reasonably interesting fights in UV. Some interesting ideas, I will check out this author's other maps.

This is a large and very good old map, so old that the sky texture is mentioned in the credits of UAC_DEAD. It flows well and keeps going and going, and must have been epic in 1994 (it's a bit slow-paced and drawn out nowadays). There's a clever bit where you catch a hell knight in a cage and squish him. You have to wonder whether the author knew what the word "phallus" meant, or if he just chose it because it sounded gothic.

Old map, not too bad. The famous "UAC_Dead" took the sky texture from this wad. On the gameplay side, it's alright with some clever traps, but it drags on after a while. I did really like the baron-killing trap at the end, though. 3/5

Possibly one of the most popular textures used in the 90's (The sky1 starry sky); It has appeared in a number of wads, including UAC_DEAD.

Teriffic, and terrifying. Old school Doom at its best.

A remarkably complete mod, considering its extreme age. Makes use of a lot of techniques that still don't get used often enough today, and although it is garishly textured (seems to use most of the textures in the IWAD!) it plays reasonably well and is enjoyable to explore and poke at. -Phobus

Bad: Some texture errors (tutti-frutti, misalignments, minor HOM); The goofy "guy with red eyes" texture. Good: Decent challenge; Large, non-linear level with creepy atmosphere and neat special effects (set a trap for a monster, for once!). Overall: A few visual issues, but really a great level. Quite recommended. 5/5 -VV

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
