About This File

A totally non-linear level, other than needing all three keys to exit, you're free to go anywhere you want. Play on HMP for a Doom-like experience, UV adds the Doom 2 monsters, NTR is real easy. Clear all otherworldly mutants, secure the base, and live to tell another tale.

Big non-linear tech-base with no music replacement (D_running ad-eternum).
I know there's a more polished version in an unfinished megawad, with a lot better combat and navigation.

Cool idea, not sure about the execution. I recommend playing the reworked one.

Quite pleasant, clean design effectively using up the space. No big fights/interesting areas nor any kind of surprises though. Good level to play once, that's what it is.

Okay, it got confusing really fast! There were certainly good areas with tons of fighting going on, but I can't get the red key. Nevertheless, the map proves to be one gaming challenge amid aesthetics and it's on year 1996 too! Wished I could finish it. The confusion is enough to notch down some points despite the big map potential and fighting fun. ~1/5

Remarkably well done adventure level, demonstrating that f.e. clever gameplay is superior to slaughter gameplay based on simply adding as many monsters as possible. Even after 19 years: solid 5*. @ Grapevines Elite club & other terrywad creators: *this* is how DooM is supposed to be, change your mindset and try to create something like this instead of trolling with the same stupid trap over and over again... Can you?

I find it's very interesting to add difficulty settings that dictate the whole game style. Easy makes it doom1, and hard makes it doom2. That is truly awesome. This is also one of the few "nonlinear" maps that I truly enjoyed playing.

A bit frustrating at times with the hitscanners, but I enjoyed the exploration. ~vf

An excellent WAD in almost every way. This could easily have been a part of one of the big megaWAD projects of its time, were it not for the slightly confusing progression (you keep strolling around until you land on the keys). It's old, but it's good. If you like the Memento Mori's then this will be well worth your time. --4/5

One of the top five wads of 1996.

Superb layout and reminds me of id levels at times, but the gameplay is too much of a slog. 3 stars from me - but if you're patient you might consider it a 4/5.

Great gameplay! Finally, a wad that makes me want to explore and have fun. Unlike many other megawads where I want to get to the next level right after a minute because of the boringness, this wad entertained me throughout. Really if a megawad contained high-quality wads like this, that levelset would possibly be the greatest Doom megawad ever made.

Hmm... not quite what the 10 years of Doom description said, but... It's awesome!! The creator went a bit overboard with the hitscanners, and I always hated how everyone replaced the awesome PlasmaRifle SFX with something worse. But a huge, sprawling, well-detailed map deserves a full star!

what is so good about this? its basickley just a big ass teckbace, the only monsters are zombie's and cacodeamon's, and its so big that its a pain in the ass near the end to navigate to the exit, this made me tierd and board 2/5

I've just finished playing it; excellently well-done. Manages to be both sprawling and huge, but structured enough so that you don't end up running around without a clue. I was impressed with the way that every door, every new turn presented me with a bunch of monsters to kill, and I had a real sense of achievement at the end.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
