About This File

A largish level, with monsters from lots of unexpected places, and a few cool ideas to show off, including some nice light- sourcing (sort of). This is a level to make the cautious wary, and the brash, dead. To set the scene, read the story at the end of this text. Only weapons and monsters from Episode 1 are included. Not suitable for a Deathmatch, although the start locations are in there.

This is a technically competent, but otherwise moderately well designed 94 map. Use of raising stairs and such is offset by poorer choices such as doors rising into sky near the end. This map is an improvement over tree1, and some of the traps are fun, particularly the penultimate one, plus it has more monsters and fewer obscure design choices or puzzles so has better flow. But with a couple of exceptions it's mostly clearing enemies in front of you. It's not horrible, just needs better design choices.

I personally think that this has not aged as badly as most wads from this era, the map is balanced and does not feel like you are ever in an unwinnable situation surrounded with no where to go. The textures could have possibly been used a bit better and most of the rooms are not really much to look at from a technical standpoint. But overall this map still manages to get the job done and gives you a small piece of action that satisfies, average yes but worth playing 3/5.

This is very good for such an early level - from May 1994, it's one of the first hundred files in the Doomworld archives. It doesn't amount to a great deal, but it's technically competent and the balance of health, ammo and weapons is finely judged. One room almost killed me. It feels like a good level from a year later. The final battle is a bit of a disappointment but this is miles ahead of most other 1994 levels.

Pretty good for 1994. The battles were fun and even challenging at some points. It's aged terribly, yes, but it's much better than some of the other wads of its time. 3/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
