I've played my share of DOOM and pretty good at it I think, but this was just plain too hard. Tons of stuff coming at you and not nearly enough ammmo, for example...and the maps didn't flow well at all. Underwhelming.

One of the best classic megawads. The levels had a great atmosphere to them, and were pretty fun to play.

This is one of those wads where you just have to honor its age and impact at release, and TBH I feel the DWMC failed there miserably. Sure, if it were released today, MM would be forgotten in minutes. There are tons of maps that are average or even subpar/quite bad for today's standards. But this is early 1996, folks. It might be the first full fledged community wad ever released freely. Much like Fava Beans, it must get an additional point for age; that's only fair, and you should play it once. So 4/5.

This was the first megawad I had ever played, a great introduction to the world of Doom WADs and a great representation of just what amazing things people can come up with when starting from scratch. ~vf

Classic, classic, classic! Perfect on every level, it's one of the most entertaining and continuously engaging WADs ever. I love the level designs, the challenges, the gameplay...it's perfect.

Can be both really fun and incredibly frustrating. Playing in SP is kind of tedious on the maps that are especially co-op oriented. I can ignore the roughness of the detail given that it's a wad from 1996, but that doesn't excuse a couple of these levels (Map10, Map12). Some nice gameplay overall, and it does co-op well. Also, the good maps (Map28, Map23, Map07, etc.) are super-fun. So for that, I'll bump it up to a 4/5. -Snakes

By far, it's not as good as everyone saying it is. Most of the maps are boring, and often annoying and confusing. The level design is pretty good, but nothing outstanding here. A disappointment 2.5/5 (OK I realize it's certainly more fun when played on co-op...)

MM1 is one of the best Doom2 WADS out there. I remember playing it back in the day with a friend until the wee hours of the morning every night. This WAD is incredible.

Playing through this the second time, I realized that this wad has infinite replayability. Definitely one of the greatest wads ever made. It captures DOom perfectly.

Sorry, but this megawad can never be 5/5, it's not perfect, it has some bugs and 3 ridiculously ugly maps but for all the rest 4/5 is well deserved!

There are very good maps like Map28 here, but there are horrible too, like 29 and 31. Overall a good megawad, but second part is better. 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
