Icarus: Alien Vanguard

About This File

Icarus is a whole new set of 32 DOOM II levels from TeamTNT. It is now available on ftp.cdrom.com and its mirrors. See below for the exact path.

Icarus has 32 levels that are excellent for single and cooperative play, but we didn't forget the Deathmatchers of the world, either!

We've taken extra steps to make sure that every level is an exceptional Deathmatch level so that after you're done playing it alone, you can go through Icarus again and waste your buddies. Some maps have special features, and others reduce the level size for Deathmatch. In all cases, though, you'll know we had Deathmatch in mind when we made Icarus. And no more days of filtering through all the junky DM levels on the 'net.

The worst TNT creation, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's a mixed bag for me. A lot of the levels look very dull and monotonous, and the gameplay is likewise. However, there are some standout maps and neat graphics that look good even today, and the gameplay is not too hard either. The plot is unique as well. For that, Icarus: AV gets a 3/5 from me. Evilution and Eternal Doom are far better and more noteworthy efforts. An aged wad best played for nostalgic purposes.

It's kind of fun. There were a couple of interesting levels in this megawad. I enjoyed this a lot more than its sequel, Deadalus. 4/5

Sweet WAD. It's your typical Team TNT creation. Mostly small and easy maps, creative and "catchy" level design, straightforward gameplay, that's the way I like it :) Shouldn't be a problem even on HMP difficulty - much like Scythe. My only complaint is that the intermission screen looks pretty ugly, and some levels are very poor in details, like if they were made in '94 or something... 4/5

A solid megawad with a decent story. Looks a bit shabby nowadays but there's plenty of fun to be had here. And the thematic touches are cool.

Well said bro. I'd give the big five for the music alone, though the maps would go underrated then. It's all very cool, the maps make sense and are made in the realistic branch of Doom map making. If you liked TNT, this is for you. If you're looking for more Plutonia-esque action thuogh, you still might wanna check this out. All said, it's by Team TNT, it's still great despite it's grey hair. In other words-a classic. Enough babble, five.

Probably the mod I like the best, because of how it succeeded in getting me back to DOOMing after a long rest. I like the storyline very much, and how the levels reflect it with great consistency throughout. The music, with not one doubt, is the very greatest I've ever listened to in a DOOM mod, and I can say I've played many!

People saying it's just "average" - Do me a favor and see how tough to use DEU is, and come back to me. We didn't always have Doom Builder! Was the music for map11 really written for Icarus? It rocks the house, glad it was reused in the Brit series. A legend, 5/5

Well, unlike most of people here, I didn't like Icarus that much. While the levels pack a great plot, they are not that interesting per se. The spaceship design was a new thing in '96, but even back than they didn't look great. The gameplay was a very mixed bag for me, and the levels are very underditailed, some of them are, actually pretty hideous, essentially single-textured (silver) and thus look very drab. It pales in comparison to MM and Evilution was a notch better IMO as well. A 3 from me.

One of the all-time greatest megawads. Looks as good now as it did when it was released, and the maps have enough depth to remain interesting even when you've played them countless times. Nice music too, but that's just icing on the cake.

Old and simplistic with some mild nostalgic value at most. Gameplay alters between messy and fun to messy and not so fun. The maze level is legendary for its notorious coop stopping ability. Some decent midi tracks and new graphics make for a few memmorable scenes. 3/5 stars. -Johnsen

Excellent work. I remember when I first came to Doomworld, this was the first wad I downloaded. It is still as fun today to me as it was then. 5/5.

Hmm,. good fight gameplay but in several levels it's annoying what you have to do in puzzles and running aorund. I was stuborn to finish it though even though I cheated a lot because of this. I have a headache now lol. 4/5 - Optimus

despite the fact that some levels use little varitetys of textures (only about 3 or 4), this wad still uses lots of new textures, and has a constant theme going. the music is classic too! especially for maps 2,5,12,15,22,30,and 31. pure genius! this game is probably second or third best, (after eternal doom and requiem.) a must download!

I remember playing this wad a long, long time ago, and... wow. I forgot it still existed. I'm glad for it, I loved it back in the day, and now it's time to beat the crud outta it.

Nothing to write home about, but very good. Great gameplay. Though there are a few levels that are kind of crappy-looking, others are very clever.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
