I got a goddamn bone to pick with this wad (or at least the D2 conversion)... the exit of level 3 (the sewer one) just takes you back to the first level, and I can't find no other exit in this bitch.  I know that in D2 conversions exits to secret levels do this, but the exit to this one seems to be the legit one, and so I have to IDCLEV to level four to continue.  So whatever the screw up was, I don't like it.  Also I can't play the secret level on my crusty-ass version of Chocolate Doom without it crashing, and it's the most well known level in this wad.  So it sucks.

Don't get fixated about E1M9 - it may be a bit weird, but the other levels are good. E1M5 particularly is very creepy and interesting. It's a truly oldschool WAD. 5/5

Hmmm... Tipical 1994 levels, but in this occasion not very enjoyable and without interest. If you aren't an oldschool maps fanatic, avoid them. Meh.

Yuk. Overall pretty bad. I haven't played through the whole thing. Got annoyed on E1m9 after a string of annoying things along the way and decided to stop. If u like exploring long, open, underdetailed areas then go ahead and have a blast. If on the other hand you want to play something half-decent, stay clear of this one. 1 Star. --- Starburst

Most of this episode replacement sucks. Go straight to the secret level. It's a hellish level that uses outsized scale and dramatic differences in height to create a huge underground cavern of fire. The central feature of the level is an extraordinarily long, winding staircase running from one side of the level to the other. Just to get up it takes a minute. At some points in the level you'll be on a narrow ledge and be able to stare out for what looks like kilometres of distance. Excellent geography.

Very old school—sparse details, monotone texturing, and one real buggy level! Even still this WAD has two very good things going for it—A specific story backed up by a natural progression of levels, and great use of scale and layout. E1M9 is the best level, but the other levels show nice ingenious touches as well—I liked the torture chamber and the incinerators. Play with Gzdoom + lights.pk3--the lighting adds wonderful atmosphere that makes this wad replacement all the more enjoyable.

The first WAD I played... ever. It has a special place in my heart. It may be simple, but it is still fairly good - it has a developing storyline, dark and creepy atmosphere (one of the few WADs that actually freak me out), and is reasonably challenging. Playing it brings back lots of fond memories... - 5/5 (D!)

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
