DANTE'S GATE 2.5

About This File

DANTE'S GATE is the first level in my INFERNO series. The level has an entirely different look and feel. For the most part, the only "theme" I had in mind was to make the level as aesthetically pleasing and consistent as possible. But there is a storyline:

After all this wackiness at the UAC base, you have lost track of your lady-friend, BEATRICE. How the two of you ever got separated is no great mystery, what with all these demons and devils running about, but you're damned if you're going to go through Hell for nothing. The only other survivor besides yourself and Beatrice is VIRGIL, the beatnik space poet. He last saw Beatrice by one of the warp- gates. Chances are she made it through -- but what's on the other side?

Only one way to find out. You'll have to go through DANTE'S GATE.

Revamped version of the first ''Canto'' of the Inferno series by Dr. Sleep. I don't know why, but I liked more the old map. There's more care in the illumination, tougher enemy opposittion, and too much brown.
Overall a good map of a pioneer author. The readme files of the middle nineties are so much fun.

Competently made, easier to navigate than the sequel, Crossing Acheron, but the combat here actually seemed more difficult, with some of the chaingunner usage potentially causing a lot of damage. Pretty moody with the dark lighting though the atmosphere doesn't seem as strong as in the sequel.. Overall I preferred Crossing Acheron.

WTF was the author thinking? This map could be the first third of the first map of a megawad and did not deserve to be released as standalone! The author MUST try harder, much harder. 1/5 for encouraging him.

V2.5 is so much different to the original. Its completley re-textured to re-evulate the feel of the Master Levels. Very good stuff -pc.

This is another revision of Anderson's first map. This time, it runs in Doom II and the map has been updated to include Doom II's new monsters and weapon. The texturing and lighting has also been improved, and the map looks a lot nicer, despite looking pretty good in the earlier versions. This is a fun map to play, and there are quite a few secret areas as well as some surprises. Worth the download. 4/5 -Reckoner

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
