ODYSSEY.WAD

About This File

ODYSSEY.WAD is a compilation of 5 levels of the ANCIENTS SERIES created by me over the course of a month as individual episodes.

Each level is set in a different time period or locale. The concept being that the UAC agent (you) are travelling thru time to stop the influx of those friendly neighborhood beasties. The beasties have gotten their claws on some kind of time travel device.....

You must go back to the 5 different time zones and eliminate the threat to history otherwise the distortion ripples would be so terrible, that life as we know it today would cease to exist. (thats the most painless way I know of to die)

No difficulty settings and I am a baby with potato chips hands. It's too much for me.
I crawled and humped my way through the first tiny narrow passages in the pyramid.
I barely could enter the second level structure.
I got chopped to the bone in space. Muda Muda Muda!

I really liked this. A decent challenge but never too difficult. Avoids using some of the worst clichés in Doom mapping, like ambushes every time the player picks up a key, monsters teleporting in, etc.

There is a serious bug near the end of the fourth level, where if one presses the wall at one point, some dramatic changes to the environment take place, making it impossible to finish it, even with noclipping.

9/10

Beautiful themed levels, way ahead of their time. Or behind it, depending on which level you're on. You'll understand that last sentence if you play the wad. Which you definitely should. Also, if you have Unreal Tournament, compare CTF-November with map04 of Odyssey.wad.

Not to be confused with a 1995 wad with the same name. This wad has a ton of detail for its time, and the gameplay is alright. It starts off with a dull, narrow cave, but it keeps getting better until you reach the final map, a spaceship with interesting effects. The only problems are that there's barely any health on UV and some of the close-range Baron fights are tedious (especially in MAP03) 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
