Pretty damn good hub. Although there are only 4 maps, there is a lot to do (it took me ~2 hours to complete) and a lot of sights to see. It's not incredibly detailed or perfectly aligned, but that's totally understandable considering the editors and hardware available at the time. There are some cool traps and uses of Hexen's advanced features (such as the spinning and moving walls in The Valley Of Shale). And most of the levels are quite large and complex, with the best example being "Druid's Keep", a truly massive castle with almost every inch filled with places to explore. The one exception is Matted Breaks, which is an homage to Doom's E3M1 (Hell Keep), and even uses the same music. It's very low-detail, low-verticality, maze-like, and all in all boring. Thankfully it's non-necessary and by far the shortest level. The final boss level (against the Heresiarch and his minions) is pretty well-orchestrated, and it ends with a neat scripted sequence. Overall it really is a great hub that I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys playing Hexen.

Also, I don't know what the hell "dg93" means by "Well this was quite a strange wad 0_0". There's really nothing odd about it.

dylux: Very Good Wad. My ONLY complaint was be prepared to go back and forth between the levels A LOT. Very comparable to the 2nd level of HeXen (The 7 Portals). Took me about 4 hrs to complete. Would definitely play again.

Good, fun hub, though not without its flaws, as noted above--the crushing doors, which kill fast if you get jammed in them, are peculiar. I was lucky enough not to screw anything up so as to get stuck, though. The secret level is a remix of Doom's Hell Keep, but aside from that the maps are large and interesting to explore though not always detailed. The scripting is good in a non-showoff way. The victory text (but not pictures), is also changed, a nice touch missing from too many mapsets.

A good WAD. Has the authentic Hexen feel. Plays and looks a lot like the Shadow Wood hub in most places. There are some design flaws, though--there are a couple of places in Valley of Shale where you can become trapped with no means of escape if you do things in a certain order. Either save the Chaos Device until you're positive you're stuck, or be prepared to "Casper" through a wall. Those small wooden doors in the Druid's Keep can kill you, too (I don't think this was intended). --TDotW

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
