Castle of Doom
(COFD.WAD Version 1.00)
1/1/97
Before playing the Castle of Doom WAD, please note that this WAD
is *very* dark. It presents an entirely new playing environment
for those who are doomed. It is best to play it in the dark and
be sure to adjust the BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST on your monitor to
achieve the best effect. (I learned this lesson when I started
playing HEXEN. I *thought* the graphics were awful. Then I
adjusted my monitor and eureka! Duh!)
This WAD is a SINGLE PLAYER ONLY scenario for DOOM-I.
Several new textures have been placed in the game. I did not,
however, change any sprites or sounds in order to save on WAD
file size. I hope you will enjoy this new environment.
Overall, I think the WAD plays pretty well. I cannot find any
HOM effects or other undesirable anomolies. Some small defects
involving texture alignment and a little "slowing" of the game
due to use of two-sided linedefs will keep this WAD in the
amateur ranks. I wrote it while on vacation and I don't have
time to fix these things right now. Nonetheless, I think it
turned out pretty good.
One final point - this is not just a shoot-em-up WAD. There
are puzzles inherent in this scenario. (I was impressed and
influenced by HEXEN gameplay). The order that you do things in
is important! If you throw a switch at the wrong time, you may
be doomed. Also, when you enter certain areas, there may be no
turning back. Go for it, but SAVE GAME OFTEN!
DOOM-II conversion is yet to come if I get some positive
response on this version. This WAD was created and tested on a
i486DX using "The Ultimate DOOM".
I would like to know if anyone gets through the "Ultra-
Violence" difficulty setting. Please e-mail me with your comments
or questions. I can be contacted at tjtasto@cloudnet.com.
********************** TO PLAY THIS WAD ********************
*
First, of course, unzip the file in your DOOM *
directory. You should have the following 3 files: *
*
1) COFD.WAD (The new map and Textures) *
2) COFDS.WAD (Optional sound) *
3) COFD.TXT (This file) *
*
Then type: *
*
doom -file cofd.wad *
*
If you want to play with the single sound *
replacement, then type: *
*
doom -file cofd.wad cofds.wad *
*
(Yea, I know - but somebody might be new to this. For *
newcomers, note that none of this modifies DOOM in *
any permanent way. Just delete the files from your *
directory if you want to be rid of them. *

Title : Castle of Doom
Filename : COFD.WAD (I hope there's no other ...)
Author : Tim Tasto
Email Address : tjtasto@cloudnet.com
Misc. Author Info :
Description : Dark and foreboding. Castle of Doom
is reasonably large. It took me 30
minutes to get through it on the
"Hurt Me Plenty" setting. Beware, there
are traps! Be careful of switches and
save game often. Doing things in the
right order is critical to completing
this level. Don't be afraid to leap
across voids either. In one part of
the level, you must run in order to
get across the void and into the next
room.
Additional Credits to : Sheeesh! Not enough space. ID software,
Raven software, DOOM fans etc., etc.
My wife, for letting me spend 2-weeks
locked in my "computer room" working
on this. SAMS publishing for the "how-
to" books. Those who wrote freeware
and shareware editors. Also, other WAD
authors from which I got ideas through
playing their WADs. Finally, the authors
of DEEP - a great tool that is well
worth the small registration fee.
