Very cute vanilla wad! Very nice for 1997.

I can't treat 25 year old WAD too harshly but...
While the level design is absolutely amazing for the period, my problem is with the gameplay. Not the difficulty per se or few unfair traps, that's quite standard thing these days, as much as several parts which deny you backtracking and few seemingly worse yet, preventing you from completing the level if you take a wrong direction at certain point. Also in map I think 4 or 5, 100% dark room with enemies and maybe 2 dozens of pillar makes you play blindly using just map which is extremely frustrating. Maybe there is some incompatibility with source port or sth like that, but still few glitches can not be blamed on that in my view. Didn't find will to play the last map despite loving the level design, which says something.

After 25 years, Mordeth E1 doesn't quite retain its "legendary" status. The texturing is monotonous, leading to the levels all looking the same and feeling frustrating to navigate. The opposition is 90% fodder with not many memorable setpiece battles and new weapons handed out quite rarely. Still, Mordeth E1 stands out among other late 90s releases for its impressively large, non-linear, and atmospheric maps. Each is filled with tons of complex secrets beyond the usual "press use on the misaligned texture" variety. There's also some really inventive use of 3D space for the time, including a few clever platforming bits. I highly recommend playing with the DeuSF version in a high-resolution port to better appreciate all the details.

When a few levels of DEMO PLACES are cool, and this is supposed to be a TC with everything being new, you know you have to come back. @Mordeth I pray you will one day finish off this project and your Eternity Engine projects to the best of your ability.

I actually used this files MORDETHfb97-dsf but its the same wad with lumps properly organized.

Simply... WOW!!!

Love it from start!

I really like exploratory maps with clever puzzles and secrets and pretty good encounters.

The maps are neat, detailed, have a really good atmosphere and great architecture. The resources are used in a way that one can't ignore; its just really organic and nothing standouts as unfitting. Perfect texture work, indeed. (Don't know why, but while playing it, Suspended in Dusk by Espi comes to my mind... maybe some of the texture usage remind me of that amazing work).
The dehacked monsters are good and interesting alternatives.
I love the fog effect and how it dissapeard when you are near and then appeard again when you look at it from afar.

If this was the demo, and after seeing some juicy screenshots, i just can drool dreaming about this long awaited mapset finally being released.

Thanks MORDETH for this demo, its something really inspiring.
I doesn't care to wait another twenty years to finally play the complete version ;)

If you're looking for varied visuals, this isn't for you, but it's pretty great if you're in the mood for some exploration and key hunts. Some levels could use a better song than the stock iwad tunes. Minor touches, like new monsters or fog that moves around, are cool.

Pretty good for it's time, despite being unfinished. Still worth playing for the gameplay which is good. Make sure you load both wads and the deh.

Yeah...it's never really going to be finished, despite whatever jokes are circulating, sad. :( But that doesn't mean you should deprive yourself of one of the most impressive episodes of the era. Six well designed levels, each has plenty of thought put into it, they're all fun to play, and they all stick to that cohesive brown medieval theme. So just load just all the wad files and the deh with a modern source port, and have some fun with what actually was done!

I will tell you a secret. There is no such project as Mordeth anymore. It's a running joke. Yes, there was a plan to make a sequel but it's long-forgotten now.

Very good WAD. Finally played it in 2015. Still no sequel. Bummer.

Those complaining about "hanging corpses" should perhaps consider to actually install this add-on properly. The original WAD is not compatible with source ports. Either read the installation notes, or download the alternative archive (mfb97dsf.zip, available from Mordeth TC site) which can be played with a source port.

I can't wait for the full version. With all I've read on the site, like It will have many authors, this 1st episode (which already kicks major ass) will be greatly revised, it will have extreme detail, architecture, massive levels, theming, is intended to give a whole set of WORLDS to explore, some maps in hubs, moving vehicled, kickass GP, and tons of other port enhancements, it sure sounds to may like it may be the ALL TIME BEST WAD, and maybe that BY FAR aswell!!!

This is a pretty fun wad with good design. To anyone who has trouble with getting the wad with special effects just download the 97 version.

An excellent project. Absolutely NO reason not to play unless you believe that Mordeth will actually be finished. I don't. And even if it does someday get released, you might as well play this anyway, because you'll probably remember next to nothing about these maps by the time it does - even if you have a good memory. Time will tell. 5/5 -Brandon D. Lade

It's good, but is someone willing to explain me why is this considered to be a TOTAL CONVERSION?! I mean total conversions are wads like hell to play... not this one.

Barely above average wad. Hanging corpses impede movement and are annoying with enemies present. Level design is good, with interesting atmosphere and gameplay. Short, so try if you only want to commit a little time. Sunglasses on Sarge look cheesy. 3/5

Pretty darn good set of levels in medieval city style, with lots to explore. Superb dehacked work. m01 is a bit bland and boring. m07 sucks.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
