The story continues...
You never thought you'd be so glad to see a hole in the ground...
Fresh from your vicious battle with the Barons of Hell and their
cronies, you were actually glad to find that hidden door in the lava pit, and
screamed in victory as the yellow key they guarded opened the door which
hopefully led to a way out. Crossing your fingers and trying not to think
about your shrinking supply of shotgun shells, you jump down into the pit,
hoping for a soft landing.
You didn't get it.
After what seemed like ages, you claw your way back to consciousness,
and open your eyes. There isn't much to see except for the faint flickering
light from above, and the feeble light from two small candles in front of
you. Stepping closer, your eyes become more used to the diminished light,
and you see a vast cavern in front of and below you, dimly illuminated by the
river of molten lava that divides the cavern floor. No sooner do you
gracefully drop to the floor below than you hear the bone-chilling hiss of
imps. Grabbing your double-barreled, you step out to see several lobbing
fireballs from nearby pillars. Your shotgun begins singing a familiar tune,
and your peripheral vision falls upon a shiny plasma gun on top of one of the
pillars. As you wonder how you're going to reach it, a fireball nearly
causes male pattern baldness. You're startled; you were quite certain you'd
killed all the imps! You look up to see more fireballs coming at you from
far across the cavern, out of shotgun range.
As you easily sidestep the incoming projectiles, you hear a demon
growl in the darkness; uncomfortably close to your ear! You dash backwards,
slamming two shells into your double-barreled shotgun, thinking that the imps
across the way can wait...
Author's comments, semi-spoiler free:
=====================================
1. Fear not, sports fans, the plasma rifle and rocket launcher await
you. The BFG is prepared for those who DeathMatch.
2. To exit in Cooperative and DeathMatch modes, have one person wait in the
exit room, and have another press the blue switch in the lava room. This
switch reveals the multiplayer exit.
3. This level is meant to be played immediately after Escape From Damnation
I: The Prison. Starting out with a pistol, it can be rough. :)
