About This File

STRAIN is THE largest DOOM II Total Conversion. And it's FREE!

This is the product of our painstaking effort at a true successor to DOOM II. We hope you'll agree that it is much better than 90% of all those $50 shovelware first person shooters that wish they were DOOM!

STRAIN includes 32 new levels, all new music, and a complete story which carries through the levels. It also contains 100+ new textures, and many new baddies, weapons, graphics, and sound effects. Yes, that's right: new baddies and weapons!

Designed for single play with special support for co-op and deathmatch play. All difficulty levels supported - from beginner to DOOM god.

Please visit our web site for more info and the story!

STRAIN is up there with the most legendary mappacks ever released for Doom. Constantly interesting to play, jam-packed with custom enemies and weapons, loaded with interesting level designs and action-packed fights, it hardly gets better than this. Like a fine wine, STRAIN has aged perfectly and is as much fun to play back then as it is today. For the ZDoom aficionados like me I recommend strainfix.pk3, a repackaged version that contains everything and works perfectly. 5/5

The file on here was packed with some weird format, Winrar and other unarchivers wont open it. You can download the unsplit version from here http://www.doomwadst ation.net/main/strai n.html As far as mod itself, seems good, but I am not a huge fan of the UI (ammo counters and portrait etc replacements).

Shame on you, previous reviewers. http://doomedsda.us/ lmps/830/strain10.zi p Now, to the WAD. A few AMAZING maps mixed with so-so maps. I loved playing maps 21-27 or 22-27, so many good ones close together. Also MAP10, 14, 17 were very good. Many custom monsters, some of them are well-balanced, some of them not (the demon with 217 HP was my favourite change). 4/5 stars, vdgg

First off, this is not a total conversion, since it doesn't replace everything. Having said that, STRAIN is incredible, especially for its time. I remember playing this back in '97 when it came out, waiting for my slow computer to download the huge (at the time) file. But boy was it worth it! 5/5

To unpack the weird files in the zip, go to the directory they're in and run "copy /B strain.001+strain.002+strain.003+strain.004 strain.exe" and then run strain.exe to get the WAD and DEH.

For anyone who has xp and can't extract these files extract the zip to C:\strain then open your explore menu and go to C:\strain. Click File-->New-->Text file then name it explore.txt. Next open it with notepad and type "unpack c:\strain c:\strain". Then name it explore.bat. Finally, double click it AND... strain is finally yours.

Really strong. You can tell they put so much attention into the gameplay, the entire WAD just has coherence that a lot of other WADs fail to match. The monster and weapon conversions are well done and offer a different experience than the norm. 5/5.

This is terrific and definitely a must play! The maps are all medium-sized, mildly complex and nicely detailed and textured. The more if you consider that this masterpiece is from 1997! Best of all are the new monsters. Expect to find hordes of cute turbo-imps, a mini Cyberdemon, flying, firing wheels and many more that I don't want to spoil now. The originality of maps, monsters, puzzles and ambiences is mind-blowing.

By far the biggest TC of its time, and still contains some nice stuff, even if a bit of a grab bag. Solid maps for '97.

Level design... You can get worse, but this isn't very good either, I got bored after playing the first two levels (level 2 is tedious...)The new weapons and enemies aren't very interesting too , but you've got to love that new machine gun enforcer !

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
