HEXEN BADLANDS

About This File

A detailed single player only level for Hexen. Some devious puzzles as well as loads of action. A huge outdoor desert area, with a fort, a castle, a well, a tower and lots of dungeons and cultist places. It would have been a staggering cripple on the 486 DX2 66 I had when Hexen came out. On a Pentium, it's smooth, though.

There are no truly secret secrets in this level.

Perhaps I am being unfair as this wad was made a long time ago but this wad was very boring. There is a surplus of unnecessary nothingness throughout the map especially in the starting area. You also spawn immediately under attack by a serpent that is not even in your view which is very cheap. There were no real challenges or obstacles offered by the map. The end was very anti-climactic as there was no boss fight or big battle. There was a krater towards the end that was completely useless given that there is an abundance of mana around the map.

Adding more detail around the map would have been nice. I noticed efforts here and there like the blood stain in one of the prison cells. There are a lot of tall walls around the map which could use some 3D texturing. I like having a vast space but there needs to be some variety in the space. Some mounds here and there, more enemies, perhaps some vegetation... it's all very bland as it stands. With the huge space, there is a good opportunity to have a grand boss fight in my opinion.

Large but uninteresting level. There is a lot of vast, empty space, and when you do get to a building or cave it's very undetailed and usually uninteresting, full of corridors and boxy rooms. The enemy encounters are also pretty repetitive and uninteresting. There aren't very many artifacts to use (except for flechettes, which the author seems biased towards), which is unfortunate because artifacts greatly contribute to Hexen's gameplay. As for the puzzles... there really aren't any. The author's idea of a puzzle is putting a key in a dark corner. That's not puzzling, that's just lame. Also there seems to be zero scripting, which again is a big part of what distinguishes Hexen.

Although this wad isn't outright terrible, it's not very good either.

I liked it. I wish more people would map for Heretic/Hexen rather than for Doom 2.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
