Really friggin huge, so huge in fact that it leaves you feeling physically exhausted after slogging through some of the more massive levels. But it's got excellent gameplay and it looks great, except for some of the new custom textures which can be kind of lame. Plus it's got three levels from Sverre in it! GO SVERRE!! But yeah, certainly one of the best megawads around and highly recommended.

If you are not a fan of "find the hidden switch" puzzles then this wad will annoy the crap out of you. If you are then there are better games for it that DOOM. I would say get this wad just for the music, but no need as the music has been released separately.

Quite inspirational in terms of architecture, but a bit dated in the look of more than one level. The very first maps are unnecessarily tedious and might discourage most players from progressing. Overall, a moderately adviced play. *** >Lupe

Jim Flynn's levels are the most epic maps I've played in the history of all things video game related. ~vf

Beautifully designed levels, but it's never clear where you should go next (to the point that I can't finish half of them simply because I get lost), and they can be very sparse and boring to play. 3/5

I was a bit intimidated when I unzipped this; at first it looks like one of those pre-source port mods that has to be patched up in order for it to work. Thankfully it seems to run fine if you just load up Eternall.wad. I can understand the plaudits. The first three levels are awful, but after that it turns into a set of gorgeous, large-scale levels with a Hexen/Heretic flavour. It's ferociously tricky.

Wonderfully detailed, but over-the-top with its difficulty. The maps are ridiculously huge, the challenges are complicated to the point of insanity...each level just drags on and on. Not really my kind of thing. If you like WADs with gigantic maps and over-the-top challenges, then this is the WAD for you.

Just spent over two hours on the most obscure switch hunt bullshit on map31 and decided to put this one down and not come back to it. The levels aren't even that huge they just take ages due to the inane puzzles.

First level shows potential, but then it starts on 2nd map with no way out.

Excellent level design--some levels are rather bland, but the medieval levels more than make up for it with great architecture. However, the puzzles on some maps are downright ridiculously obscure (unmarked doors, very hard-to-see switches, etc. all this on giant maps which may take well over a hour to finish.) MAP30 perhaps takes the cake with its utterly ridiculous, confusing puzzles, and pretty much ruined the finale for me. Still worth seeing, for the huge, well-crafted levels alone.

Yeah, it's confusing, but I think they're a lot of fun to learn. I used to hate some of these maps, but after learning them in an editor they became some of my favourite. Don't be lazy!

In terms of architecture and design, this wad (at least most of the levels in it) was so far ahead of its time that no words in the English language could truly describe it. Sadly, the gameplay on some levels is a bit more hit or miss due to the many, many puzzles that could be considered highly complex even by today's standards - but still, if you can put up with that it has no other faults, and I don't hestitate to give 5 stars.

Utterly brilliant, but the levels way, way, way too long and puzzle-like. I never did figure out map30. --Woolie

My all-time favorite partial conversion. The levels have a melancholic beauty seldom seen in DooM mods. It has excellent new textures and flats, terrific map design, mesmerizing music, and challenging gameplay. Isn't that why we all play DooM? 6 Stars. Heh.

An epic adventure, so much better than the overused gun and gun idea.

Went from playing this in crappy CGA under DOS circa 1998 to PRBOOM at 1024*768 circa December 2013. as a result It's even better now than it was when I first found this WAD on some local BBS back in '98. Only giving it four stars because I, too, had to "hack" parts of it in Doom Builder to make it more playable (solvable) Otherwise a good effort, even 15 years later. It'll probably hold up for another 15.

This is an amazing megawad IMO, although it may not suite everyones taste. It contains 32 new levels, most of which are enormous and complex (and some ultra-complex), practically all new textures, and of course, new music. The architecture is good (especially for 1997), and I found the gameplay fun, since I don't mind huge, puzzling levels, but those who do mind such levels will find this VERY frustrating. In my opinion, it gets a 5/5, but those who don't like huge and/or complex maps should stay away.

It's really good...but a few of the levels (31&20) are so long, so boring, and so puzzling that I had to skip them. Also, playing this in the day is impossible due to the darkness. Still, a very solid Megawad. 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
