WELCOME TO VIDEOLAND!
---------------------
Mega Hi! A lot of you are probably thinking "Wow! A Captain N DOOM WAD! I
didn't think anyone but me remembers that show!" Well, you'd be surprised.
There are plenty of N-Fans out there! This program is a joint effort between
me (Mark Moore) and my friend, Nick (Dragonicus). It started out because I
felt that there needed to be a Captain N DOOM WAD.
STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PLAYING
-------------------------------------
This game is based on the Saturday morning cartoon series "Captain N: The
Game Master", which ran on NBC from 1989 to 1992. If you've seen this show,
great - you're a fellow N-Fan! If you haven't, then go to my site, The
Unofficial Captain N Home Page, and read all about it. The URL is:
http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Set/4389/
Return to this text file when you have sufficient knowledge of the series.
The story for this game contains characters found only in the episodes "THE
MOST DANGEROUS GAME MASTER" and "THE BIG GAME". Watching the episodes, or
reading the summaries in the episode guide on my site, will help you to
understand the plot better.
Also, the story for this game takes place the day before the beginning of
"THE SECOND SIEGE", PART 4 of the "CHANGES" miniseries, but after the
conclusion of PART 3: "THE GAME MASTERS OF NORTHRIDGE". "CHANGES" is a five-
part Captain N miniseries I wrote. It can be found on my site. Reading PARTS
1, 2, and 3 is essential to understanding the plot for this game. Come back
to this text file after you've read them.
Now that you know what's happened to the N Team up to this point, let's get
to the story.
THE STORY
---------
Following their arrival in Videoland, Kevin's friends from California -
Rick Walker, Stacey Anderson, Romeo Roberts, and Julius Jones - had quickly
made themselves at home in the Palace of Power. Not being skilled enough to
go out on missions, the new N Team members generally stuck to guard duty at
the Palace.
It was 8:00 AM. The N Team was sitting at the table in the Conference
room: Kevin, Lana, Simon, Mega Man, Kid Icarus, Stacey, Rick, Romeo, and
Julius. Gameboy stood to the side of the table. Duke was lying under the
table by Kevin's feet.
"All right," Lana said, leaning forward and folding her hands in front of
her, "I've called this meeting to discuss a very important issue. What color
paint do you want for the Warp Wagon?"
"I'd like <blue>!" Mega Man exclaimed.
"Orange for me-icus!" Kid Icarus countered.
"Gold is, like, really <groovy>!" Stacey pointed out.
"Why not just keep it the same color it is now: white?" Kevin asked.
"Personally, <I'm> fond of <red>!" Simon said. "<Blood>-red, actually!"
"Yeah, man," Rick beamed, "red <and> white - our school colors!"
Just then, an image appeared on the viewscreen of the satellite monitor.
It was Mike Vincent.
"How ya doin', <Lame> Master?!" Mike asked.
Kevin sighed in annoyance. "What is it <now>, Mike?"
"I'm just callin' to say that I'm better than you - as <usual>! Face it,
Keene - when it comes to games, I'm the <best>!"
"Mike, I can beat any game <you> can!" Kevin countered.
Mike grinned. "Wanna <prove> it?!"
Kevin smiled. "Wadaya have in <mind>?"
"Okay, here are the rules." Mike explained. "You'll warp into a video
world that I select. You'll get an infinite number of lives, but each time
you die, you'll be warped back to the beginning of the level, minus
everything you've gained. If you make it out, I'll consider you my <equal>.
Deal?"
Kevin stood up, smiling. "Deal! Which video world?"
Mike grinned. "That's a <secret>!"
Mike pressed a button. At that moment, a swirling blue warp appeared in
the Conference room. Mike could be seen on the viewscreen throwing
something. A moment later, a video camera, a picture camera, a radio, a Sony
Discman, a pair of gloves, a pistol, and brass knuckles came through the
warp, which closed afterwards.
Kevin leaned over and picked them up off of the floor.
"What are all <these> for?" Kevin asked, looking at Mike.
"The video camera will follow you around, sending video and audio back to
the Palace, where your friends can watch your progress. <I'll> be watchin',
<too>, Keene. You can even record your progress to watch later on, if you
<want>! Personally, <I'm> recording it <all> - even this conversation right
now! Watching you fight those monsters will be funnier than a cheap Kung-Fu
movie!"
"Very funny!" Kevin said sarcastically, somewhat annoyed.
"The radio is so you can communicate with each other." Mike continued.
"The Discman is to keep you entertained. It could get awfully <lonely> for
you! I hope you enjoy the CD. It's called 'Mark Moore's Rendition Of Music's
Greatest Hits'. It's got a collection of some of my favorite music on it!
Don't damage it!"
Kevin smiled happily. "All right! Thanks!"
"The gloves are so you won't burn your hands from the heat given off by
some of the weapons you'll be using. Oh, speaking of weapons, no Power Pad
or Zapper, sorry."
"What?!" Kevin asked.
"You're too good with them." Mike said. "You'll have to use the pistol to
start off with, then upgrade to other weapons later on. You'll find ammo all
over the place to reload."
Kevin nodded. "All right, fair enough."
"And use your left hand for the pistol." Mike added.
"What?! Mike, you <know> I'm bad with my left hand!"
Mike grinned. "That's right!"
Kevin groaned. "Fine!"
"The brass knuckles is to fight when you run outta ammo."
"What's the <picture camera> for?" Kevin asked.
Mike smiled. "For the <memories>. You can stick 'em in a photo album!"
Kevin turned on the video camera. It began hovering over his left
shoulder.
"All right, let's go to the Communications room." Lana said.
Lana went over and sat in the left seat in front of the control panel.
Simon sat in the right seat. The rest of the N Team stood in back of them.
Kevin unfastened his Power Pad from his belt and took his Zapper out of
his holster. He hung the Discman and brass knuckles on his belt. He hung the
picture camera and headphones around his neck.
Mike appeared on the viewscreen. He nodded, smiling. "Ready, Keene?"
Kevin nodded, smiling. "Ready!"
Mike pressed another button. Another warp opened up - this time, a green
one.
"May you not suck too badly at this game, Keene!" Mike said, and ended
the transmission.
Lana adjusted the frequency until they picked up the video and audio from
the video camera. She turned to face Kevin. "Okay, try your radio, Kevin."
Kevin clicked it. "Hello?"
His voice came through the speakers, mixed in with the audio from the
video camera, but still perfectly understandable.
Lana clicked her microphone. "Hello!" she answered.
Lana's voice came through crystal clear on the radio.
Kevin smiled. "Sounds like it's workin'!" He hung the radio on his belt.
He put the gloves on his hands. "Guess I'm all set!"
"Good luck, Kevin!" Lana said, smiling.
"Good luck!" everyone else wished cheerfully.
Kevin smiled and winked with his right eye while giving a thumbs-up with
his right hand. "Thanks!"
Kevin put the headphones over his ears, turned on the Sony Discman, and
pressed the Play button. He then jumped through the unusual green warp zone.
The video camera followed him. The warp closed behind it.
The rest of the N Team immediately looked at the viewscreen and saw Kevin
warp into the video world that Mike had picked out to challenge him.

WHAT YOU NEED IN ORDER TO PLAY
------------------------------
To view the graphics and hear the sounds and music, you need a registered
copy of DOOM and DOOM 2 (any version is probably okay).
To see the demos, you need The Ultimate DOOM v1.9.
To use the DeHackEd patches, you need DeHackEd, The Ultimate DOOM v1.9, and
DOOM 2 v1.666.
WHO DID WHAT
------------
I (Mark) was in charge of the sounds and music.
Dragonicus (Nick) did the graphics (except for the status bar).
I recorded the first and second demos for The Ultimate DOOM.
Dragonicus recorded the third and fourth demos for The Ultimate DOOM.
I did the DeHackEd patches.
CONSTRUCTION
------------
To make this program, I (Mark) made a few separate PWADS, one for sounds,
one for music, and a few for graphics and demos. I then combined them all
into CAPTAINN.WAD. I also made two DeHackEd patches, CAPTAIN1.DEH and
CAPTAIN2.DEH. The whole process of making this game took me and Dragonicus
from Thursday, April 17, 1997, 8:10 AM, to Thursday, December 4, 1997, 11:00
AM.
I used the following software to help make the game:
DOOM and DOOM 2 by id Software (of course)
WinDAT v2.19G by Voyetra Technologies
Sound Recorder v3.11 by Microsoft Corporation
NewWadTool (NWT) v1.3 by TiC
DeHackEd v3.0a by Greg Lewis
CLEANWAD v1.0b by Serge Smirnov
I got the music and graphics from various sources:
TITLEPIC of Kevin from the cover of a Captain N comic book, copyright 1990
by Valiant
Modified "bloody" version of TITLEPIC graphic created by Dragonicus
Original graphics created by Dragonicus
Status bar graphics (except for Kevin's face) created by Greg Lewis (not
involved in the making of the game)
Sounds taken from the Captain N TV series
Captain N theme music made by Lyndon Moore
Level music is mostly MIDIs I found on the 'net, except the following, which
was taken from various PWADs:
"Axel F" taken from E2MUSIC.WAD, author unknown
"Another One Bites The Dust" and "Beat It" taken from TYLERMUS.WAD by Tyler
Blohm
"The Blue Danube Waltz" and the "Naked Gun" theme taken from LITHMOVI.WAD by
Chris Hopkins
"Danger Zone" taken from WAKAMUS.WAD by Michael Karikas
VERSION HISTORY
---------------
Version 2
Completed January 19, 1998, 6:00 PM
PWAD Size: 2739027 bytes
Space saved from last version: 28923 bytes
I shortened a sound. Originally, Kevin said "All right, that's it - you guys
are toast!" Now he just says "You guys are toast!" It makes more sense. The
monsters haven't even <done> anything to Kevin yet! Why would he say "All
right, that's it"? It saves a bit of space, too.
I rerecorded all of the sounds from "MEGA TROUBLE FOR MEGALAND", using a
copy taped off of NBC, rather than the Family Channel. The same goes for
Mike's laugh from "THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME MASTER". I used an NBC copy
instead of a "Captain N & The Video Game Masters" copy.
Finally, I replaced the sound where the final boss in DOOM 2 is defeated. In
Version 1, Kevin said "I won the game!", which was a sound from "METROID
SWEET METROID". Now he says "Game over, you lose!", which is from "MEGA
TROUBLE FOR MEGALAND". It's funnier, and more appropriate.
Version 1
Completed December 4, 1997, 11:00 AM
PWAD Size: 2767950 bytes
