those brave enough not to quit at the sheer monotony of Astrostein's first incarnation will find that the sequel holds much of the same thing. loads of similar rooms, finding switches and/or keys (making sure not to break sequence otherwise you'd get stuck), and fairly slow gameplay. weapon progression is a bit slower too, and the enemies are of course hitscan-heavy. the layouts take a turn for browner bases, which is a good departure from the gray stuff from before but not nearly enough to compensate for the level layouts, which are still bad. the chainsaw replacement was somewhat interesting, a cargo mover that could be used to drill enemies, and there's even an enemy who uses it too.

overall though, Astrostein 2's gameplay actually is a little worse than the previous one. the first level will have you getting a laser rifle (shotgun) after a rough beginning but nothing else, and then you get the SSG replacement in the next level thankfully. the BFG replacement is a somewhat useless minelayer this time around, you get it in the last level but it has next to no value when the plasma gun can do the work just fine. you may also notice that there's officer-centric levels, these guys for some reason replace chaingunners, and other enemies which serve as sprite replacement actually gain a lot more health this time around, SS's included. level-wise, again, it promotes the copy/paste shit and exploring every single room, even hiding important keys in samey rooms to completely throw players off. MAP05 has weird scaffolding where you'll have to go outside to get a red access card, and for some reason there's a duplicate boss monster outside the map in MAP10. it's the worst of the trilogy gameplay-wise, and perhaps story-wise too. still not the absolute worst of WolfenDoom and I'm of course not saying the entire series is horrible.

An interesting, nice total conversion with an awfully sucking (repetitive) gameplay. 1.5/5 -Milian

Looks nicer than 1 (less grey!), but many of the rooms seem to have been copied and pasted, too (both among levels and from part 1!), and it's still utterly boring. I couldn't keep myself motivated enough to even continue after level 2 - it's the perfect example of a key/switch hunt gone wrong. Go play Operation Rheingold instead.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
