About This File

A nine-level complete replacement for DOOM I, E3, full of special effects such as: - 3D bridges (over and under): levels 7, 9 - 560ø spiral staircase: level 7 - Blastable walls: levels 6, 9 - Monsters rising from water: level 9 - Lots o' cool architecture If you play nothing else, warp to level 7 -- it's probaly the best level I have ever made.

Pretty good Episode 3 for Doom. It's dated in parts for sure, definitely worth a playthrough though. Loads of eyecandy and decent gameplay here.

E3M1 - no monsters, just cool looking hell rooms. I like the concept. What bothers me though is that they are all separate ideas, just rooms with cool looking structures/concepts. There needs to be something that ties everything together more. That would have probably made it even harder to do in 98' though.

E3M2 - Not really memorable, weird ideas here and there just to make it cool. Once you pass a certain white door there is no going back. Can't get those secrets or enemies you missed. End room is kind of a brown 90s mess, not really appealing to me.

E3M3 - As mentioned before ammo is pretty scarce in this map. Loads of cramped spaces. Hard to even tell where you have to go. Not a fan of this map.

E3M4 - Second best map in this wad. Huge exploration map. Reminds me of The Citadel from Doom 2, but larger, more epic. Ammo is scarce is the beginning though.

E3M5 - Pretty linear level, that gives you the impression of exploration though. Best in the wad for me.

E3M6 - Exploration level. It's like a mix between M3 and M5. Parts are linear, some parts pretty cramped. One of the best in the wad though.

E3M7 - Another ammo scarce level if you're playing from pistol start. Starting area is really annoying with some optional shotgunner "traps". Not a fan of the fake 3d staircases either. This map has a lot of weird scenery as well, which is kind of cool. Second least favourite map.

E3M8 - E3M3 ver 2.0 - Ammo is not as scarce, but there are a lot of cramped spaces, lava floors, mixed bag for me

End fight is kind of memorable - you can watch Barons and Spider Mastermind fight.

E3M9 - Kind of a mixed bag as well. The huge lava river is cool. Caco fight in the dark with huge amount of space - not really that exciting. Rocket launcher is almost hidden in a weird place. Might even have trouble killing the ending caco swarm. I definitely like the start of the map more.

AWESOME. When I play other Doom 1 hell episodes, this is the standard by which I compare them too. It's got everything. Mood, atmosphere, large spaces, meticulous detailing, intricate puzzles, and epic exploring. My only bad knock on this is reusing the same Doom 1 music track. Bleh. The worst. But that's just me. Whatever though. The visuals and hard as hell gameplay is killer.

Check out my album (http://imgur.com/a/hfNJM) for some of my favorite screenshots. Could have done more but there is just too much awesome to capture it all.

Mostly legendary. M1 is crap that should have been omitted - large underground maze with automap disable, one lost soul as the only monster, no weapons or ammo and 3 health bonuses. What rubbish. The rest generally brilliant but.

An absolute classic vintage wad. Can be a bit rough around the edges at times, but it was 1998 and it's impressive for that time. Recommended. -TRRobin.

way too confusing layouts for me and not really up to par with Lutz's other stuff. E3M4 is a really good map though.

The first level was really lovely - atmospheric and just "something different". The rest was OK, but ultimately not as good as I'd hoped.

No doubt, this is one of the best FPS episodes ever made for any game IMHO (and I've played a LOT)! Visually stunning, gigantic levels with so many moving parts that I felt like I was inside a giant puzzle box. I played it with the Doomsday Engine and it was beautiful. I used the Quake soundtrack for background music and it was truely a memoral experance. I'm gonna look this guy up and see what else he has done. So if you find this page, DROP WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING AND PLAY THIS WAD!

This episode has a nice, oldschoolish gameplay and some cool vanilla tricks. The most astonishing thing about it is the maps' giant size. They are all very carefully done, looking good and giving a nice atmosphere. However, I didn't understand the first map, because I was roaming around in these giant halls and rooms without encountering any monster at all. Gameplay started with map 2 then, and it was quite a fun, though the maps took me a while to accomplish. 4/5 -Milian

This is the best doom episode I've played. Brillant oldschool style, nice ammo-balance and difficulty. Better than the original inferno. 5/5

Really good stuff, although I felt that the gameplay needed tuning. It sometimes seemed that I was wandering about for hours with nothing to shoot in some levels, and wandering about in general in all levels. Other than that, though, this is truly memorable stuff. Chris Lutz is a god among men when it comes to mapping. Try this out, you won't regret it. 4.5 stars

Inferno is definitely a legendary pack for Doom. Unlike some other reviewers here, I actually think the lack of monsters in the first map is brilliant. The architecture is good enough that monsters aren't needed to admire the scenery. My only complaint about this pack is how confusing the non-linear layouts can be. The ammo is also too abundant, but I fixed this by reducing the ammo by 1/2 using a mod. Overall, this is a memorable pack that deserves 5 stars.

Excellent excellent wad. If you enjoy atmospheric level design and great old school gameplay this one is a must have. The first level alone is a visual masterpiece. -CapNapalm

I think the first level shouldn't have been as optional as it was, especially having the very best atmosphere in the entire wad, but other than that this is unmissable! Not quite as uberdetailed as its E1 counterpart (P:AR) but plays as good (and possibly then some)! Either way both of these episodes are must haves!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
