About This File

An average sized wad centred around a large open courtyard. You start out behind some cover, watch out for seargents around you in a bunker to the southwest and a shooting gallery to the east. The level is split into two main areas, the door to the south of the courtyard leads to my bit of the level, and the corridor to the east leads to Simon's. There is a keycard kept in each area.

Pretty standard for 1994, with some big empty rooms that have some couple enemies and then some smaller rooms with a higher amount of enemies oddly enough. There are over 300 enemies on the map, most consisting of Imps and Zombiemen, and while you can alleviate that with the Plasma Rifles found on the map, the shooting isn't really all that grand. There is a teleporter maze with no clue as to where to go, so you have to figure out yourself. I'll admit, I did find it clever initially, but just that having to do some guessing to get through it is just not fun.

Might be alright if you don't mind 1994 WAD standards, but even then, better WADs came out from the era.

This is dated June 1994. You have to admit that the name is catchy. Sadly the level itself is ropey. There's an unusually high monster count (almost 400, most of them imps) for the period, but it's just a lot of large empty undetailed corridors and swarms of shotgun men and demons etc. There's a bloody irritating teleport maze that you can't skip, and there are no clues on the ceiling. Argh.

Don't listen to the morons above, this is a great challenging map. 5/5

The first minute or so of gameplay showed definite promise, but unfortunately, everything crumbled after that. Too many long hallways and overabundance of ammo in places ruined the gameplay.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
