This wad is very...uhhh....crap?

The texturing is hideous as hell, the map design feels random, difficulty is all over the place, and it just feels like the creator snorted something before making this.

Overall, not very good map pack

One reviewer described this as 'Doom on acid', and yep that's right on the money.  Excellent episode replacement, maps 6 and 7 still haunt my nightmares

Rated as 1995 mapset, obviously. Levels vary from very poor to above average (E2M6). Texture use is mostly random, which does not add to the ambiance. Unbalanced gameplay offers too many dull moments, but also gives a few fine challenges. Overall this looks & feels like an enthusiastic but amateurish 1995 map, thus despite the claims below, it is definitely not legendary. Yet 3* because of the effort and a few good ideas.

Yeah this isn't very good, sorry. Perhaps a few of the later maps are slightly better as a whole, but still. E2M3 is particularly pointless, pure filler there. I'm not going to call it vomit because there is definitely worse but this is 1-star material for the most part (E2M3 not even that) a few maps maybe creeping to 2 stars but not worth 2 overall

Some of the most gobsmackingly ugly and unplayable maps I have ever been dumb enough to believe reviews about here. Absolutely awful.

Heh. These were some awesome maps. I remember back when I was 13 years old, I e-mailed Greytale and asked if I could make an enhanced "TC"/edition of DarkHell with new weapons (at least as new as vanilla Doom could muster) and some extra. Surprisingly, he agreed. Never finished the project, but firing this stuff up was always fun. A great guy and a great mapset. 5/5 - LordHaHa

This is an E2 replacement from June 1995. I assume it's a tweak of id=9510. My review applies to this equally, which is to say that it's visual sandpaper, not much fun to play, a (very) few good ideas. Doesn't deserve to be in the archive so many times. There's a DoomII version at id=4058, and E2M3 is also id=567. E2M3 could have been a NUTS-style masterpiece, but it only has a few baddies. The readme mentions a Pentium 50, which never existed; odd.

"You will LOVE these maps, or I have no imagination worthy of freeware." -- Greytale. I loved it, Greytale, I loved the very good unusual architecture, the gameplay, and I really had great fun with it!!! 5/5 because you MUST know it. It should belong to the Legend of Doom. 4 years after having played it, I still remember it!!! - Jive

Found this on one of my CDs.These are some of the strangest looking levels I have ever played. However, given it's age[94/95]the gameplay is pretty damn good! So,if your eyes can stand the visual assault;I suggest you give this a try.As retro as it gets.4.5-d.d.koop

Not the best maps you'll ever play, but pretty great for 1995. Experienced Doom players will probably want to up the difficulty on this one, I played on Hurt Me Plenty and was practically tripping over soul spheres and megaarmors everywhere I went. If you're feeling like going old school there are DEFINITELY worse WADs you could play. Considering the age it's a 4/5

This is far from "the epitome" of E2 style maps - The texturing is awful, though the maps are a bit of fun. I've seen far worse but this is instantly forgettable.

As usual, these people don't know what the Hell they are talking about. WHERE'S THE DECORATE LUMP AND NEW WEAPONS LOLOL Simply put, this is the epitome of an E2-themed episode. Doom level design doesn't get much more classic than this. --Grimm.

This is dated June 1995. It seems to be fondly remembered - Youtube has videos of a guy playing through it. The levels are a mixture of pleasure and pain. The textures, design are vintage 1994, i.e. garish and clasing and angular. They look hand-drawn. But the gameplay is quite good - there's loads of health and ammo, lots of monsters, and the levels generally flow well. E2M3 is from 1994 and is in the archive separately, as id=567.

At first glance, the textures seem to "clash" together in very odd ways. It's like Doom on acid. But the levels actually play very well, with a moderate challenge and various quirky places to explore. This is an interesting episode out of the ordinary. -riki

That's rather horrible. Utter lack of design, random texturing and overall shite. Raycasted and textured cat vomit -- Brun Ohn

Wow, these maps that I created so LONG ago (1995!) are still out there. I still get messages about them. Some realize that limitations of 15+ years ago... coupled with the fact that I did this in my spare time during college... figures in! Maps were re-designed with an editor called "DEU" (Doom Editing Utility)... which was keyboard-only for the mostpart. However, Doom was so new, having an editor was awesome! :) Well, enjoy the blast from the past! -"Greytale" -youtube.com/greytal e

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
