About This File

A small, dark, gothic style doom1 map - 262kb when unzipped.

I suggest you turn the lights down for this one. I have tried to create a genuinely eerie atmosphere - lots of long shadows, silhouettes etc. Just in case you don't have Ultimate Doom, I have included the yellow sky which looks sooooooo good!!

Ammo is strictly limited. This is not an insane 'all rocket launchers blazing' affair, instead aim carefully and shoot wisely. If you don't like that sort of map then that's too bad!

..No, you don't need any source port for this wad. Doom is a great game and best left untouched...

I would really like to see some .lmp's of people playing my wads. 100% kills on UV? - well I'd like to see it! Please feel free to mail me your demo recordings (v1.9 compatible please).

The texturing and detailing are pretty good but the map is very cramped. You'll frequently get stuck on little details or want to pass through spots only find there's just barely too little room, which is frustrating. Ammo is quite low, so you'll have to think carefully about how you use it. Which isn't a bad thing at all, it's a different experience than usual. There are a few new sounds (replacing the pistol, shotgun, and chaingun noises), all of which sound absolutely terrible. Overall though, the experience is okay. It's a short but moderately challenging map that will take a few tries to complete and isn't a waste of 10-15 minutes.

This is an atmospheric early level from a man who went on to do the ace "Monolith" series. It looks wonderful - a kind of gothic church, with lots of shadows. There's a decent load of tough monsters. Against it, it's a bit cramped, and it seems odd that the lava doesn't hurt. Ammo is a bit too stingy (you really need to save those rockets, because there's one jump that's almost impossible without them). Still, it's fab for 1998, still impressive today.

for its age (today 2009) it is quite a good map, it is nicely arranged and looks good but I don`t like the fights 3/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
