Recreate Plutonia from Memory! (CP) (Completed)

Might I take map 01 midi knowing absolutely nothing about music? I feel like I could make some awful garbage even if I were to just listen to the song while remaking it (I won't do that though I promise) It would be a great first impression for anyone playing the wad :) If I get this and finish it quickly I would love to do map 29 as well. That Midi rules I would enjoy ruining it.

I'll take the MAP01 music. Writing something from vague memory sounds fun, though I hope you don't mind any creative liberties I take to fill in the gaps in my memory.

Alright, checked the thread this time, and I think I will take map16's music. Run Em Gun Em Kill Em doesn't stick in my head as well as Death Mask but that should only make the result more cursed.

At this point though we'll have to start scraping the bottom of the barrel yeah. We could do the Master Levels, plus maximum Doom.

I'm halfway through Death Mask, it's the worst thing ever and I can't figure out how to add drums to the midi lol

MIDI for Map16. Deliberately put the minimum effort into this in hopes of preserving the uncanny valley aspect, and included references to two other MIDIs as well (just to pad out the tiny part of the song I actually remember - one is a Freedoom song I thought could mash up well with the bassline, and one is a different Plutonia MIDI that I accidentally started writing til I realized I had recreated the wrong song.) I wasn't sure how to end it, so I hope you don't mind the telephone ringing.

Now to listen to the actual "Run Em Gun Em Kill Em" and cringe at myself, if not find out I've recreated the wrong Plutonia track again.

90% done, just gotta put in Multiplayer stuff and difficulty settings

Note - I was aiming to make this completely from memory, but for the life of me I could not remember what the secret in the map actually was and curiosity got the best of me.

"In the green marble wall at the south end of the level, climb the stairs and make your way left along the narrow corridor in the back of the room. Approaching the skull switch here opens a room back on the lower floor. There is half of a lion-face on one of the walls in the new room; open it to reveal a teleporter to a ledge in the north-east corner of the hall, which counts as a secret but has no items."

Done. Decided to leave my original interpretation of the secret in (because why the fuck would you have an empty secret?), and for some combat encounters that I was fuzzy on I did my best to emulate the spirit of Plutonia while filling them in. Difficulty settings and multiplayer support should all be good to go.

Here it is: map 32's music, Plunge On, Saw Further

 

This MIDI was my absolute dream project as far as anything in the DOOM community was concerned, and I'm so happy I was allowed to make this.

 

I might however make some revisions to the audio balance before the deadline as I keep listening back to it, really hating one or two bits of it but then being fine on the next pass.

 

Another Edit: Yeah, here's the final version. The stereo square wave was dominating the mix throughout so I've lowered it. Other than that, I keep spotting other mistakes, but I've now gone back to listening to the song normally (waited long enough) so I'm no longer allowed to correct those.

About 1/3 done my MIDI, may not sound like a lot, but I started three hours ago, and worked on it for two, I'd say that's progress.

The other day I went and gave Blood Rush a couple of listens.

 

If I've got time, I might have a shot at doing it as I don't think it's been claimed yet? (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.) I'd have one free listen left in that case, but with the deadline looming I can't really promise anything.

Not gonna lie, it sounds very good. It's a bit different feeling from the original one, but it has some special feeling to it.

I don't know you but one of my favorite games when I was a teen was a DOS game called "Acid Tetris" which had an awesome soundtrack. One of the songs was called "Continuum" which I made into a MIDI a while back.

"continuum.mid" is just a combination of a nickname I used in some Discord servers ("the continuum") and ".mid" to signify that I compose MIDIs. I made it up pretty much on the spot because I was tired of my old username; it was complete nonsense and its incorporation of my legal name was getting increasingly uncomfortable.

 

Good song! I take it Acid Tetris is a Tetris spin?

I got back to working on Neurosphere. Just got done putting some teleporters in the blood moat so you can escape, along with the beginnings of the first building and a raised bridge as well.

I haven't played plutonia map28 in maybe... 5 years? It's been a long time, and I decided not to look at it at all before mapping. In my defense, I used to have the record for this map  (before zero master destroyed me 😭) so I have played the level a TON.

 

Either way, let me know how it goes, and I still havent played the original again for now :P

Hey there, apologies for the delay on Odyssey of Noises, I didn't get as much time as I had hoped for yesterday, and I've done as much as I can today, it's very nearly done, just one small building left on the blue key path, and the big central building. After that I just gotta put in lower difficulties and multiplayer stuff and it's ready to go! Definitely done tomorrow, sorry again for being late.
