The community has already been enjoying a steady flow of new members since the success of the nuDoom games, but sure, there could likely be a new influx of newbies who were probably inspired by MyHouse specifically and want to try mapping for themselves. Incidentally, this might be the most successful mod project to get this level of attention outside of the community since Linguica's InstaDoom mod back in 2015 in terms of news coverage and the like.

What even is nuDoom? I've never heard about that lol

I've gathered some more comments from my friends. Since I was feeling confident that some of my family would like it, I've taken their responses too.
I'll also be sharing the gameplay time they used while trying out the myhouse.wad.

My Cousin: (GT: 1 Hour)
"I thought it was a simple house tour... If I had known it would be nightmare simulator... I would never have played it"

My Sister: (GT: 15 Min)
"It's okay, I don't really like Doom but I enjoyed the music"

Elliot:
"It's missing something... I'm not sure if after an entire playthrough if I've found everything... I feel like there's still more to be found. I read the journals only to find that it is just photoshopped edited images. I also did some research into the images, I know some details on original creator, etc. Not that it matters, I think this is just an ARG, Luke. It feels like one tbh"

NightGirl: (She asked to be named her username instead of her real name) (GT: 5 Hours)
"Wow-wee! This was the best map I've ever played! It has just enough music, features, textures, design, story, it never feels like too much. I'll admit that some of the scenes did drag out my gameplay time which I think were added as filler to keep the gameplay time becoming longer than necessary. It was so good though! I think I found all the keys but I'm not sure... I'm still unsure about that pilot scene. Is this some sort of dream? There's so many questions. My sister tried to watch me play it but she got bored due to it being in her own words: "Too slow" So I gues that's it for now. I may try it again later, you sure got me hooked on this game!"

Malia: (GT: 2.5 Hours)
"...I think there will be many people that will hate for me for this but I think this was overrated. It isn't really scary, it doesn't really scare me. The music was annoying in most areas but I started to like it when I was tired. The textures are impressive, the design is okay, the house layout is simple. The story is not interesting enough. The puzzles are way too complicated for some people. I think having silent hill puzzles in this wad is a big mistake... I was searching for what felt like hours! I don't like the nightmare scene. I don't like how I have to go from one place to another on loop. I really don't like the enemy placement... I know you may hate me for this, Luke. I appreciate you sharing it with me but this is just vomitrocious. I rate it 3/10... Maybe I'm just not a Doom person. I feel more like I'm a Valorant person tbh"

Considering that I will be having a reunion tomorrow with old friends. I may recommend this to them so they can share their thoughts here too. I've been told that several of them have already created accounts to post here. One of them said they want to write a journal on how they felt.

Considering most of the buzz is on YouTube channels that have nothing to do with Doom, I'd say it's unlikely. It's never bad to have new faces and new ideas, though!

Is it only me or is the Vulkan renderer significantly faster than OpenGL?

Like, it's not just a little faster, i think the performance with this mod got to 2x faster in my case. In the big battle i would constantly drop below 30fps but now i'm over 50 at all times. And i don't even have an AMD card, this is with a GTX 1060.

Is it like this with GZDoom in general?

It's like that with GZDoom in general. Vulkan is like wizard magic for games that support it.

It's fair to ask that question, but what you need to realize is that there are already more Doom maps/mods being released in a year than any one person can possibly play.

To be realistic one could Just own Doom and Doom 2 and likely never need to buy another game and never run out of something to play for decades.

100% true. I've barely played anything else in like the last five or six years.

probably not, but i do think that it'll bring in a wave of new community members, and i feel like that's more important than anything else

there's many that can or have brought people into the doom mapping world

For some people it will be MyHouse.wad

For some people it was Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal

For some people it was Brutal Doom

For me it was 00s era ZDoom and Skulltag wads (Phocas Island 2, NeoDoom, KDIZD, ZPack, ect) that got me interested in mapping

It's nice seeing people coming here and enjoying this spooky house mod. Noticed the thread got locked though so I guess that's that for now.

Whether it'll cause an "explosion", if it gets some new people to stay here, that's good enough.

Erm... why was the main thread locked? Seems kinda random.

On topic: No idea if ushers in some sort of a mapping renaissance but either way I think it's opened many people's eyes to whats possible with modern Doom and that's cool.

Kind of an expected end result with how the wad was presented. Whoever the mystery author actually was, probably didn't intend on the wad blowing up this big and having every aspect of it torn apart and scrutinized.

I 1000% believe it will, dude. My only problem with the existence OF this WAD is, like someone above has said, is that it could become something much more obscure and accidentally fall into the pit of being used as clickbait by kids content creators. It has the elements that these creators desire from horror to appropriate it and desensitize it for kids. Liminal spaces. Blood. Funny easter eggs. Kids play area. Jumpscares. Shifting world. Funny looking monsters. And if these creators begin with MyHouse, they could keep going onto the rest of the classic DooM community.

List goes on. I could be overthinking it, though, and I totally do hope I am overthinking it. Last thing I wanna see of this amazing WAD is for it to be muddled with by kids content creators hoping to make a stack from YouTube.

I haven't even tried that wad because any other house styled wad simply would go out of my interest. It's a great tribute to his passed friend, well made and marketed well. Is this seriously kind of stuff people like playing Doom for nowadays?

Give it a try, man. It's awesome, and has more to it than you may see at its surface value. THere's a journal that comes with it that essentially is a how-to on the game, and you even get special messages for trying to use IDDQD, Noclip, IDKFA, IDMUS, and other stuff.

It reminded me a ton of Hideo Kojima's P.T., a game which was very specific like a puzzle. Without spoils, it's great. Appreciate WADs like this, my friend. They're not one in a dozen, that's for sure. :)

No... Doom is on a loooong, slow decline. We're all getting older. But, if anything, it'll be a nice speed bump on the way to complete decline.

We're going to see some stuff like this probably in 2030 through 2050... but yea, unfortunately, Doom is now 30 years old and it's not getting younger. I still remember ZDaemon breathing new life into the online multiplayer scene back in 2000-2005. At least, for now, offline single-player Doom has staying power.

I think there's gonna be an explosion of people making their own houses in Doom.

So that's why Sandy Petersen made his house and his parents' in Suburbs! The final version was cut down and filled with basic demons because of technical difficulties, but the planned version was populated with the horrors of scrapped Age of Empires content, all while being haunted by the Ensemble Studios higher ups with slight lovecraftian and escherian undertones, the final enemy being the mentioned "Snake", which is supposedly Tim Willits. And while traveling back through flashbacks and memories, Sandy defeats him in a deathmatch, pulling a Back to the Future, annihilating the creator of deathmatch creating a never-ending paradox of Doom never being created and existing at the same time.

That's why the final city maps with the houses look so bland and abstract, we just weren't ready for the reality fabric bending power of mapping that Petersen was capable.

I disagree. The deathmatch side of things has dwindled for sure, but in terms of singleplayer content at least, the last few years seem to be have been the best the doom modding community has seen.

As for the question in the OP, myhouse has already drawn a lot of new people to the community, and even if most of them don't hang around, I'd wager there's still going to be a good amount of new stuff that wouldn't have been made otherwise. Maybe not a mapping "explosion", but at the very least a fresh spark.

I don't think it's going to die. Doom have been a synonym for a first person shooter, the gameplay can change, graphics, plot, even name but not the core idea.

If you look closer to the differences between all franchises series it's like each of them reflects the time it was made in:

- Doom - very end of 1993 - some bit of late 80's thrillers, action and horrors, tech bases (aliens);

- Doom 2 - very end of 1994 - it kinda transitions into more "enigmatic" and "magic" worlds;

- Quake - if Doom was made in 1996 it would be Quake, depressive gray times and movies, exactly what the game looks like;

- Doom 3 - 2003. Serious, troublesome and scary. Magic times are over. People want more realism in the video games, computing power makes it possible;
- Doom 2016 - a brutal doom parody, you're now a guy who wants to crush and run for mere fun. A cyborg leads you and commenting why and where you go next;

- Doom Eternal - Doom 2016 with more bells and whistles, a bloatware. Now you got stick, sticking out of a stick, a flame stick, a shooting stick, two more sticks, freezing grenade, standard grenade, a punch, a chainsaw, bfg, a red sword, dash and lots more bullshit. A bunch of smartasses on youtube commenting how cool it is and you are simply not that smart yet to like it (stupid). The game implies that conservative guys do good by counteracting the "little push" to bring mankind in order for it to become more technologically advanced but in such a manner that no conservative in their sane minds would make a game like this. Rip an tear, until it's done (you go and buy another DLC).

People say doom and quake are dying every year since the 90s and yet people still make stuff for both games and people still play deathmatch. If that is what death looks like then it sure doesn’t seem too big of a deal.

I think if anything this wad has bought what the Doom community has been doing for nearly 30 years into the open.

I don't think it'll cause an explosion, but it will definitely cause a bunch of people to get into mapping. Although it would be nice for there to be a doom mapping explosion.

See my point about single-player Doom: it's incredibly vibrant.

I rarely play multiplayer Doom anymore. Not enough players except for the organized matches these days.
