DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

Reminds me of the Doom 64 barrels sporting the UAC logo, plus Tony's making a "Barrels O' Fun" reference...really seems like they're tapping into classic territory for inspiration.

I'm still going to be fucking pissed if they make a doomgirl.

Why? Because the series protagonist, who is just a generic placeholder for YOU, the player, might not have a dong in the movie?

Yeah, but you got these kids that keep bringing it up...I suppose now we should just ignore it and move on.

I just wish they had the Doomslayer with the helmet always on and that way they could keep it gender neutral.

So Nina gives us a little tour of the base (it looks like an excavation site of sorts, as there’s dirt on the ground). It’s still that same site where a sizable chunk of the action is likely to take place, since it looks pretty massive, has a very angular look, and is mostly covered in shadows and ominous lighting.

I have a theory as to why we have a female lead this time around:

So these marines are in fact looking for an ancient warrior that is the only one suited to kill all of the demons, and it’s none other than our favorite demon slayer.

In other words, the identity of the Doom Marine is literally being kept a secret.

If we were to follow the (kinda predictable, but still very, very safe) theory that this is a sequel/mild reboot of the original 2005 movie, they could easily pass off that building as the "old" UAC complex that got bombed near the end of the first movie, and they're looking for answers as to what happened.

The evidence so far suggests we'll see an ensemble of marines. The set photos and videos posted to date show at least one woman and a couple men in military gear. I would never be bothered by a lone Doomgirl anyway, but one or more surrounded by Doomguys shouldn't cause any knee-jerk concern. With respect to that old debate, let's wait for details on the story.

Well, I just checked the website of Autonomous FX and their demo reel, and I can only imagine the kind of shit we're going to see in the movie if Tony Giglio is willing to receive the R rating (he's no stranger to that). I mean, given that this is tentatively a direct-to-streaming movie and other Universal 1440 movies have also received R ratings, it might be a possibility.

From my quick look I couldn't see any project where Universal 1440 were also involved, so I guess this is going to be their first interaction ever with Autonomous.

And one last thing, they seem to be recording somewhere deep in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Pretty nice place.

I sure hope so! It would make a killer FPS scene, or something like the Doom 2016 commercial. I envision a 15-20 minute FPS scene, where Betruger is about to get his hands on the "secret weapon". Our favorite hero emerges from the tomb, smashes Betruger to pieces after which he avenges the dead characters of the movie. Everything else would just be used to set up that final scene. What makes the Doomguy unique is the fact that he is not a character. He is beyond that, he should be the Godzilla of the movie. Let the other characters handle the emotional connections.

The lighting is very Doom 64 and the set even looks like it has...abstract architecture.

I keep thinking about the director's low Rotten scores, and yet how promising the film is looking...

Well, I mean, whoever thinks this movie is going to kick-start some kind of First-Person Shooter Cinematic Universe should start thinking otherwise.

The moment it was made public that a division of Universal Studios focused on direct-to-streaming releases was working on this new movie, that should've been it for anyone concerned.

I'm actually surprised at how pre-emptively pessimistic a lot of people appear to be. Sure the first movie's shit, but at least wait till you see this movie before you form an opinion, come on!

"I don't like wine!"

"No."

That's what you're doing. I'm not ruling out the possibility of the movie being bad. In fact it may well be as likely as some people say it is. But just give it a chance.

Personally I'm still going to watch it, regardless of the cast or the plot. Thankfully they seem to have a tendency to release movies on streaming services like Netflix, so me not being able to watch it won't be an issue.

It's just that I realized something (way before we even knew about this movie) that I should've learned a while ago: the story of DOOM is way too cool for Hollywood to have.

Videogames and movies are two completely different mediums, and what worked in one place might not perform as well in the other. It's a story of a nameless, ID-less space marine fighting literal demons from Hell in Phobos (and Hell) while lit candelabras somehow serve as decoration of a command center in space. It works in videogames because it's not supposed to make sense, because it's a videogame; meanwhile, they had to make it somewhat serious and delete the demonic aspect for the first movie, and look what happened.

It won't be a major hit, and it won't make the big bucks as a movie, ever. And if you're willing to turn that kind of story into a film (again), you should be aware of that. From what I've seen, Tony Giglio seems to be aware of what DOOM is about, so I definitely applaud him for assuming control of the project and for making sure that at least it resembles the source material compared to the first film. The cast seems to be having a lot of fun too, so there's that.

Funnily enough, watching the demo reel from Autonomous FX helped me to maintain my interest in this project. At least we know there might be some cool deaths.

And while I'm at it, I believe that if there's one aspect that should make people turn their eyes to see the new DOOM movie, are the death scenes.

The first DOOM movie took itself way too seriously, and that's one of many mistakes it made. I mean, go ahead and remember every death. Starting with the unnecessarily naked zombie woman, the sewer imp, the resurrected soldier who crossed himself before headbutting the glass panel to death, the civilians that weren't zombified but still died anyway, and many others. It tried way too hard to be a horror movie when it had no right to be.

(...Hey, just like Doom 3!)

What I'm trying to say is that I want some goofy ass gory deaths, deaths that might actually become an incentive for the viewer to sit down and watch the new movie just to see them.

So we’ve got what appears to be the inside of a dropship or vehicle of some sort. Interesting to see that it seems to be either Mars or Hell outside the exterior.

That’s my other big issue with the 2005 movie; it was that it was completely convinced you’re watching a good movie when it really wouldn’t pass muster for an A-movie script. Everyone took the bad film seriously, except maybe for The Rock.

This is the most likely outcome for the film’s distribution. It’d make the most sense to reach out to as wide an audience as possible if you’re embarking on a serious project with a serious budget and serious effort. Seriously, now you have once-struggling films find good homes on Netflix (and streaming services appears to be an increasingly diverse set of markets).

You guys do know that a movie's soundtrack is inserted in post-production and not blasted over loud speakers on set, right?

More off-screen antics, where we get to see yet another weapon and some more of that “experimentation chair.”

Based on what we’ve seen, at least the marines actually seem to have more than one weapon type (about 80% of the RRTS had an assault rifle in the 2005 movie).

Also, we get to have a closer look at one of those computer terminals. It appears to be something you’d expect to find in Doom 2016, just with the classic Doom aesthetic.

Kind of a double post (sorry about that), but here are some comments from Tony Giglio himself regarding the movie’s story:

Just for context: this tweet was a response to the above pic.

Hopefully, this should allay the fears of anyone concerned that this is a sequel to the 2005 film. Looks like this’ll be a straight-up reboot.

Well that analogy wouldn't fit if people feared it'd be a sequel to a movie they hate, since they've already -or tried- watched the old one.

Glad they confirmed it isn't a sequel to that garbage. Probably the best thing they could tell many people who watched the old one.

Since we’re both based on the same game, there are bound to be some similarities but this set is the transport that brings the team to Phobos, just like in the original DOOM game. We’re trying to be a faithful adaptation. Have faith.

We’re NOT a sequel

A military team is on a transport to Phobos.... hmmmm..... that's something straight of the plot of the original game (the one that was only explained on the manual lol) maybe the film will be based on episode 1, and is gonna have the subtitle "Knee deep in the dead", maybe we're gonna see the bruiser brothers at the end of the film and the surviving marine is gonna die before the credits roll teasing "The Shores of Hell"

Spoiler

A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos. "We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsuccessful. You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

But jokes aside, this is an interesting revelation, im glad they chose not to follow the 2005 film, also considering how the original plot was vague and read more like an outline of what happened there's a lot of room to expand. This little detail made me more interested to see what the movie's gonna be about

I'm really not looking forward to the female lead, and I'm also not very confident with video-game-to-movie adaptations, but I'm also not one to not give things a chance. We'll see. Let's just hope this isn't some PC circlejerk, I just want a good Doom movie.

Also... There was a Doom movie in the first place?

Yep, there was a Doom movie with the Rock and Karl Urban, very loosely based on Doom anyway... If you take out the small handful of times the BFG and the UAC are mentioned, it's just a generic-but-passable action sci-fi flick.
