According to this the last update was May 2017 with 2.5.1.5.  I'm not sure why it would continuously need updates.  It's not like GZDoom where features are regularly broken or removed when wads do something Graf doesn't like.

Still, no updates since May 2017 doesn't mean it simply died, unless the developer himself says so. There was a one year gap between 2.5.1.4. and 2.5.1.5. too.

@NerdyButLazy It has not been 3yrs since the last update however.

This is true. I overlooked that!

Andrey just applied some patches I sent to him. So, it's not dead, just moving very slowly.

Understandable I guess, since it's only one person developing it. Good to hear this, even if only to shut down the rumours surrounding it.

What were those patches for?

Support for recent libdumb releases and fixes for some compiler warnings iirc.

Zandronum all the way, unless it can't run something, then I switch to GZDoom. I appreciate simple multiplayer and don't mind not having edge distortion or lense flares.

I've always used zdoom and gzdoom, although I don't do mods. Tried using prboom, the mouse controls are horrendous and make it unbearable to play for me. Zando is great too, but I just don't see any reason to use it, especially considering the fact that I could care less about multiplayer.

Choco doom is awesome, nostalgia really hit hard when I used it to play some of the wads.

Eternity felt too clunky in terms of controls, no idea why (my rig is pretty damn powerful, so that can't be the issue). I actually wanted to play Mothership, but had to stop because of how terrible it played. Mouse controls were laggy and so was the keyboard input.

That's all the sourceports I've tried really. Also people who enable mouse acceleration as a default setting, please go away forever.

If someone knows a way to make prboom and eternity run smoothly, let me know, I'll be more than happy to give them another go.

@Firedust i have turned off uncapped framerate and interpolation (it wiped away all lag). I chose Choco mouse accel in Eternity to make it feel good. I use and recommend 640x480 resolution. In prBoom+ it's harder to get nice mouse feel, but changing sensitivity helps some.

I use these settings for eternity and mouse feels good to move. Depending on your tastes, you need fiddle with values.

What about PrBoom+ isn't running smoothly other than the mouse controls?

@Firedust Are you using short tics?  That should only be present if you're recording a demo or include the -shorttics parameter in your batch file.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what the issue is.  I have acceleration off and no vertical mouse movement, everything feels sharp.

Tbh, I didn't notice a difference in mouse feel going from 2.5.1.4 to 2.5.1.5 but many others have said they do.

I haven't run all the different source ports through their paces, but my main go to would be GZDoom, with PRBoom+ in very close second.  The only things that make GZDoom win out are it's ability to run UDMF maps and Xinput support.  If PRB+ had Xinput support I'd probably be using it more.

(Someone fork me a PRB+ with Xinput support pls)

the change was to sdl 2.0

something to do with how your mouse is set up in windows meant that the mouse feeling was drastically different for some people (myself included)

@Firedust just stick to 2.5.1.4

For all of u PRB+ folks, plz do give Eternity Engine a try. It has all the features (minus the TAS stuff and OGL renderer) that PRB+ has and much more.

It will also have full Heretic support in near future (infact Heretic is playable and even beatable in current DRD builds)

Unless you're on W10, the outdated SDL in 2.5.1.4. causes erratic mouse movement (Doom 64 EX suffers from the same issue), so only 2.5.1.5. is working well in this case.

I like Eternity too, but the lack of complevels and messy menus prevent me from using it more often. They really need to be redesigned.

Devs are thinking about adding some sort of complevel support in future:

https://github.com/team-eternity/eternity/issues/258

And as for the menus, personally I find it slightly less confusing than PRB+ (wayyyyy to many options in PRB+)

But they're also much better organized in PrBoom+ imo, Eternity's are kinda all over the place.

That's pretty awesome if -complevels are going to be implemented at some point.

Time has changed me, and I don't use GZDoom as much as I used to. Nowadays I use GLBoom+ for all vanilla/Boom maps that haven't been tested on GZDoom.

My only problem with Eternity is the lack of truecolor support.

Adding this would be great.  Another feature that would be great would be for it to load the most recent save when you die instead of restarting the map.  Manual loading is one thing that annoys me as a controller user.  With kb/m it's easy, just hit F2 then Enter.  But with a controller there's too many menus to go through every time I die.

Eternity is an interesting port, but it's currently missing a lot of the polish in PRBoom+ where it's easier to make things "just work". Pistol starting vanilla wads is a pain because you have to quit out and run an edited .bat file after each map. Otherwise, it resets to default Eternity complevel if you idclev or restart a map from scratch. No "secret found" sound, advanced HUD that's less advanced than in PRBoom+, and other misc. quirks keep it from being a better version of PRBoom+. Also no OpenGL for maps made around or running better in OpenGL.

GZDoom is my favorite port. Some of the other ports I haven't tried in years. I recently tried Doomsday again and it runs pretty damned slow compared to everything else. Doom 2016 runs better. Not sure what is up with that.

I can't think of any active port that isn't fun to use, or at least historically significant.

That being stated:

My engine of choice is Eternity.

EE keeps the part of Boom I like alive.

Maybe it's more accurate to say

it's the spirit of MBF and SMMU

that I adore.

I'm also partial to standardization

and am not a runner,

I'm a save user.

I'm very comfortable with command consoles;

I cut my teeth

with Quake 3.

Having to press enter to use left and right on menu widgets feels awful.

Give me my page keys any day.

I've no more problems with SDL 1.x mouse issues on my Win 10.

Maybe an update fixed it, I honestly don't know.

Gzdoom for single player and zandro for multiplayer or just for playing clusterfuck .

Sometimes I use crispy Doom for a more vanilla experience.

You're kidding me right now, aren't you? That's exactly what I wrote.
