  1. 1. Favorite source port?

prboom+, never let me down and I don't see a reason to change.

Also, the version I use has FXAA antialiasing and I have no idea why, but none of the other versions do and I'm used to it so they all look weird

Honestly, I love almost all sourceports I tried. Chocolate, Crispy, PrBoom, DSDA, Woof, Odamex, Zandronum, GzDoom...
I was a lowkey hater of Zdoom, but I figured out that the thing I hated was how the people usually configured and played it.

For singleplayer my Sourceport of choice is GZdoom, that is my 100% honest answer

It's got everything you need to enjoy all of the amazing, breath-taking and ground-breaking mods and maps Doom has to offer. New and Old.

It also has support for the entire library of ID tech 1 games

And for Multiplayer I go to Zandronum.

My favorite source port is Chocolate Doom. I really like the chunky pixels. It's easier to use than DOSBox and has the same features that vanilla has, so that's a win in my book!

I used to use GLBoom-plus as my first choice of sourceport, as I was impressed by the sharpness and clarity of its graphics. I eventually became disillusioned with it owing to things like 'infinitely tall' monsters, the lack of an autosave at the beginning of a new map and complevel issues.

I now prefer ZDoom for its no-nonsense reliability and ability to play most wads straight off the bat. Yes, I know that it's a bit murky compared with GLBoom-plus, and am aware that it's no longer maintained, so that it can't handle some more recent releases, but it's fine for around 90% of the stuff I play.

I'd like to give DSDA a go, but can't see any way of making it work. Can't see any clickable 'executable' anywhere in the folder, and assume that one needs to compile it or something of the sort?

I like woof because my dog told me to try it out and honestly there's just too many pixels these days, I don't need all those pixels I just need a few

Sounds like you grabbed a zip of the repo instead of the Windows build link at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KMU1dY0HZrY5h2EyPzxxXuyH8DunAJV_?usp=sharing

Thanks for that, have now downloaded a working version! Some scary warnings from Drive that the zip folder might have 'dangerous' contents though, lol.

Yeah, honestly I'm not sure why the compiled zips just aren't attached to the Release page with the source, but that link came from the repo's front page, for what it's worth.

the thing about pixels is that if you don't practice restraint, your tolerance for pixels will increase to hazardous extremes, to the point where millions at once will never be enough. it's quite dangerous to live as such. the less pixels entering your sightstream at any given moment, the easier it will be to cherish each and every pixel for what it really is.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but has it ever occured to you that this kind of post is very hard to read for non-native English speakers? I needed a considerable amount of effort to decipher it. Please consider this when writing in such "cool" phonetic style.

I am a native English speaker and I struggled to understand it.

GZDoom is pretty based. It seems to get a lot of criticism for performing poorly on anything other than high-end machines but I've never experienced this. On a medium end laptop, I do not get any frame drops at all when playing the vanilla WADs and most custom WADs I've tried, and only get minor frame drops on advanced mods such as Doom 64 CE, but absolutely nothing that affects the gameplay experience in any way. Source Engine games like Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2 perform about the same as Doom 64 CE does on this same laptop, and while yes Source is a much more advanced engine, it's developed by a billionaire company with a lot of resources on it's hands to spend on optimising every last bit of code, GZDoom is not. I just think it's really cool that a hobbyist project managed to implement a full on, advanced FPS game engine that transcends just being Doom.

"Gee zee doom" threw me off, being Engl*sh and all. Same reason I didn't realise until recently that there was a multilayered pun in "Knee Deep in ZDoom" because I always read it as "Knee Deep in Zed Doom". Though now that I think about it that sounds more like "the".

As a Linux user, my choices are limited to what is easiest for me to get from a repo in whatever distro I'm using month to month.
Therefore: GZDoom > Crispy-Doom > Chocolate-Doom > Odamex.

I've had a phase of discovery where I played a buttload of ports pretty regularly, but now I've settled down with Woof!

It's the most advanced engine that has a nice upscaler, nice brightmaps option, and most importantly for me: It has an option to upscale the partial invisibility for 480p! So now specters preserve their intended refraction effect on a resolution I consider playable!!!

  • Vanilla .exe's for the originality
  • GZDoom for the universality
  • PrBoom+ for the performance
  • ZDoom for the support of older WADs
  • Zandronum for more adapted multiplayer.

- Vanilla .exe and Chocolate/Crispy Doom if I know for sure the WAD is Vanilla and I'm in the mood for it.

- DSDA-Doom for a majority of WADs I play.

- ZDaemon usually for older ZDoom compatiable WADs (like DBZone perhaps)

- For Multiplayer, I use Vanilla (via Classic Gaming Arena), sometimes Chocolate/Crispy, ZDaemon and Odamex.

Quick question, is this the oldest thread that isn’t closed?

Anyway. I used GZDooM for a while but have very recently switched to Crispy Doom. The rendering made me switch. But for more fancy wads I still use GZDooM

This thread's longevity largely comes from the fact that it absorbs every new thread on the same topic that gets made, and there's about one such every couple month.
