Favorite Source Port? (Multiple Choice)

  1. 1. Favorite source port?

Chocolate Doom because of its accuracy in behaving just like the original exe, save for a few non-intrusive quality of life features (like loading dehacked patches or merging pwads). Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy advanced-port gameplay, but when I discovered Choco it renewed my appreciation for the original game, and I have been focusing on vanilla mapping/modding ever since.

That said, in my mind there are three "categories" of dooming and it is impossible for me to pick a favorite among them. The first is of course classic dooming and in that camp Choco wins my vote. But the other category is modder-friendly dooming, and when I'm going for that I'm thinking "why skimp on features?" - GZDoom wins here for simply having teh most features. The third category is multiplayer-friendly, where my favorite is ZDaemon ... but that's really just because it's the one I started with and I never felt a major pull to switch to anything else.

For smooth gameplay and cutscenes, GZDOOM!

1. Supports dialogue, cutscenes, true color rendering, etc.
2. Makes a farce out of old ZDoom and adds flavor to the old one.
3. Supports scripting for some pretty nice maps.
4. All around a good source port for those with a beefy CPU and the will to play big stuff.

For a great vanilla+ experience, CRISPY DOOM!

1. Supports 640x480 graphics.
2. Gets rid of tutti-frutti and other vanilla glitches.
3. VPOs and other limits removed.
4. Controls like vanilla and has deathmatch support.

For maximum FPS, PRBOOM+!

1. Makes heavy maps a lot easier to deal with.
2. MIDIs are half-step down and they sound pretty dark now.
3. Easy to control and very cool looking.
4. Has something in there that makes my computer run "nuts!" at 100 fps all day every day.

dsda-doom because it somehow manages the tightrope act of remaining strictly demo-accurate and also going way out on the bleeding edge with major new features and mapping standards at the same time, which a year ago I would have thought was strictly a one-or-other type thing. There's so much new stuff being added that every release feels like an event that I should wear a suit for, and I don't even own one.

What do you think draws people in to your favorite source port?

LZDOOM's local-splitscreen is great, and I wish more people knew about it - might draw more people to the port...

Tough choice between LZ and GZ - LZ for the aforementioned reason, and GZ because it has played 99.99% of maps I feed it w/ no problems.

Chocolate Doom: The less pixels I see on the screen and the more the sprites flicker and the more the midi sounds like farts the better I play

DoomRETRO: A very simple source port, basically just DOOM, but with a simple menu, and a better looking one at that. I also really like it because it feels like the Quake Rerelease except for DOOM.

GZDoom: Almost infinite mod compatability, and also almost infinite setting customization.

Woof, without a doubt. Easy to compile, and I'm getting 300+ FPS vs 120 FPS on PrBoom+. Genuinely a shining star of Doom ports.

K8Vavoom.  The beautiful lighting!  Which for my style and how I design maps is kind of a big deal.  Doom 3 (and later Quake) taught me the importance of lighting, and K8 gives me the options I find most useful in that regard.

(among many other things, like the player friction so I don't feel like Mario on ice; VavoomC is pretty neat the more I learn of it; 3d polyobjects, which finally get close to my ideal "Doom + Quake Brushes"; nice and fast compilation from source; Ketmar has been extremely responsive to my questions and bug reports, explains technical things to me well, and very nice to deal with overall; that CAS shader it has is pretty neat; advanced but still feels like a Doom port, not an engine that happens to run Doom really well; built-in gore mod; oh yeah, it plays Doom and Heretic very nicely).

My second favorites would be a tie between Doom Retro and Doomsday.  Doom Retro because it really feels like "OG Doom, but improved."  Doomsday because I've always loved how it looks, and I honestly love that launcher it has.

dsda-doom is actively being maintained, doesn't default to putting damage decals all over the wall and i reckon they're about to make it compatible with arbitrary level numbers so community projects can finally stop being 32 levels

The favourite? Gzdoom. It runs just about everything hassle-free. And since I'm no purist, I appreciate all the zdoom / hexen / udmf engine enhancements and modernizations. My only complaint is relatively high resource demand.

When it comes to vanilla maps, it's Crispy (/chocolate for testing)

GZDoom because it counts ALL monsters!

The main reason why I’m not on PrBoom fulltime and use it only for Sunder and such.

What is your favorite source port and why? I know me personally for classic doom I use Chocolate Doom but for Doom 2 and other episodes I tend to use Zdoom. Of course for mods/custom content obviously GZdoom seems to be the best, but I'm thinking of giving other source ports a try. What would you recommend?

Woof is everything I love about DSDA-Doom, but stripped down. I love using Woof to record runs, and DSDA-Doom to verify them.

Anything that isn't Z-Doom. I would rather use DOSBox than GZDoom lmao. However, I have a strong preference for DSDA-Doom and crispy

Crispy for anything compatible with it, GZDoom for anything else. I feel like I should love Eternity, I think I just need to play with it a bit more and make a habit of it (I don’t like how *ZDoom deviates from Doom’s physics in some ways, Eternity doesn’t seem to have that issue.)

PrBoom+ is good too but infinitely tall actors are kind of a deal breaker for me tbh

I like using ZDoom, the original one. GZ is cool but I don't like it's default settings and I only really use it for advanced stuff like Brutal Doom or Total Chaos.

Crispy Doom for me.

Love that it feels similar to when i first played Doom, but has some extra features to make it feel modern. When i need to run something Boom compatible i tend to use either prboom+ or lately Woof.

While i appreciate what it has done to Doom as an engine I am not a huge fan of gzdoom mods so i dont use it much unless it a wad exclusive to it.
