GZDOOM and PrBoom+

- I use GZDOOM for just about everything.

- I experienced performance issues on my old machine trying to play massive slaughter wads, but PrBoom+ solved that problem.

  Even though the latest version of GZDOOM has a similar option, I like the text only HUD of PrBoom+ a bit better.

I'm newer to doom than most members here and I've only used GZdoom, Zdoom, and Zandronium, with GZdoom being my preferred port. What's your favorite source port and why?

But anyways since this is in Everything Else:

RigelEngine - Duke Nukem II

CatacombGL - Catacomb 3D games

Wolf4SDL - Wolfenstein 3D/SOD

MacenWolf - Mac Wolf 3D port

Crispy Doom - Doom, Doom 2, etc

GZDoom - same

Zandronum - same

EDuke32 - Duke Nukem 3D 

VoidSW - Shadow Warrior

NBlood - Blood

Ironwail - Quake

YamagiQII - Quake 2

IOQuake3 - Quake 3

IORTCW - Return to Castle Wolfenstein

 

There’s more, but those are the ones I use the most. Though with Wolf 3D, I use the DOS version more often since my maps are usually made to support the DOS version these days.

for doom i use GZdoom but im thinking of using prboom for speedruns and such
for wolfenstein 3D i use ecwolf.
multiplayer i use doom seeker zandronum or zdaemon
i pirated all of the wads and wl6 files cus why not

Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny are a combined total of $5.00 on Steam.

The IWADs are not even very expensive, but I can't think of figures off the top of my head.

(Not to mention the constant sales on Steam)

Anyways, to the meat and potatoes of this post: bragging about pirating like this doesn't make you seem like a cool hacker.

It just comes off as arrogant, attention-seeking, and frankly:

Sorry if this has been reposted to hell and back several times, but I'm a bit new here, I didn't think this would be worthy of the source port forum's time, and I've never been to the miscellaneous forum before.

Games are still being sold, they're not abandonware, they're even cheap as hell for $10 for the entire classic collection.

It'd be reasonable to pirate a game like Alley Cat, or Dune II as they're not accessible anymore, but to pirate Doom and Wolfenstein, both cheap games, is foolish at best.

Piracy isn't cool and isn't glamourful.

Chocolate/Crispy/Inter fill similar niches for Heretic and Hexen as they do for Doom, i.e. Chocolate as the baseline vanilla port, Crispy adding various quality of life enhancements (widescreen, uncapped framerate, overlay automap, etc.), and International having those and some other gameplay enhancements. dsda-doom brings most of its feature set over to Heretic and Hexen, including general stuff like high resolution as well as its speedrunning-oriented stuff. GZDoom is of course the most feature-rich source port and where most of the modding happens as far as I can tell (not so much stuff for Heretic's DeHackEd equivalent, HHE, and I'm not sure there even is an equivalent for Hexen). I don't know how faithful to vanilla it is or can be made to be through compatibility options (I don't think there are presets like "Doom (strict)" for Heretic/Hexen?), but I reckon it doesn't matter as much as with Doom since significant stuff like being able to pass over/under enemies is already part of the vanilla games.

 

Personally I used Crispy when I was playing through Heretic and Hexen a few months ago and found it a very pleasant experience, much like how I used Crispy Doom when I was getting into Doom years ago. I mostly use dsda-doom for Doom nowadays but opted not to use it for Heretic and Hexen due to some graphical issues such as sky offsets being wrong (a bunch of these have been fixed recently in dev).

Welp instead of bringing a passive-agressive answer, I will take this oportuninty to say that Doom Retro is my favorite PC Doom port, I like how manages to give a modern look to Doom without being a completely different thing (Like ZDoom family ports), the only downside is that the controller support is not really good and minimalistic aproach (for making changes you need to edit a .cfg file) makes sometimes confusing to edit :/

My second is the Unity Port (no joke), it probably has the best controller support and has a BUILT IN WAD LAUNCHER, seriously the fact that it has a built in wad launcher makes it one of the best for port. The downside is the midi support (shitty playback), not having support for 16:10 aspect, and no achievements on the steam version.

Also, the console sourceports made by @intacowetrust are amazing, and great way to experience the 3DO and PSX ports on PC in a native form.
