Doom challenge: Shotgun only speedrun

I attempted my speedrun for Episode 1, did fairly decent until E1M5, where I got overwhelmed through the dark room at the end. Want to make this a no-deaths run, for the consistency of feeling like a challenge.

Sup, bro. Undertook the challenge, myself.

E1 UV-speed in 12:40.

Crispy Doom 5.2, skill 4, E1M1-E1M8, E1M9 skipped.

I screwed up several times and took a few unnecessary detours, so there's much room for improvement, but I think I did pretty good.

The only problem I suffered consistently was getting the two shotgunners near the green armor in M1 to fight so I could get the shotgun early and relatively quickly.

Ignoring those failures, it took about four attempts to finish the episode shotgun only like that.

It's not like you have much of an option when basically every speedrun out there is "deathless" to begin with. There are some niche cases where the rules are slightly different due to it being a category of its own, but yeah, deathless should go without saying.

I wonder if you folks can finish the episode by using only the pistol (not even using the fist)...

Feel free to post it there, if you want. If you do, please credit me as the runner, of course. It's not really that impressive. I imagine a better speedrunner could shave off at least a minute.

I originally was planning to do a pistol-only speedrun, but I thought that might be pushing it a bit. So I decided on making this speedrun. 

 

But hey. Nothing is impossible. 

 

If I can record worth a damn, I would post my run on the speedrun here.

I use ZDL to record in Crispy and PRBoom.

Once you get it set up (you can get it here), choose your Doom 1 IWAD and under the "additional command line arguments" field, type this:

-skill 4 -warp 11 -record YourDemo

Using ZDL, you can set the difficulty to hard and not have to write -skill 4, and since you'd be recording from E1M1, you don't have to write -warp 11, either.

To play a demo back, write this:

-skill 4 -playdemo Demo

And it will automatically load the map the demo was recorded on and play it on UV.

If you're using PRBoom, you need to specify -complevel, too. Limit removing is 2 and Boom is 9. I don't know the others, though.

I'm not even sure what is currently going on with this run that is or isn't happening.

 

Honestly, if you want to speedrun these maps, and you wana know if shotgun only is doable, or if pistol only is doable, you only need to look at the DSDA and check if the maps you are supposed to be running have a "pacifist" run. If that is the case, then you should in almost every case be able to do "pistol only" or "shotgun only".

I wanted to bump this thread with this:

E2-Shotgun-only-AC-fast

E2 (sans Tower of Babel) UV-speed shotgun only in 6:10. With Tower of Babel (as a standard UV-fast), the run is 7:05.

I had an actual strat for this run, it's mostly the same as the standard UV-speed, which wound up being a mostly shotgun-only run.

Halls of the Damned was a tricky one because if I fired in the first part of the maze, I would never have escaped (this happened on an earlier run).

I used a very literal interpretation of the challenge, meaning not using the other weapons for any reason (Tower of Babel excepted), so no rocket boost in Spawning Vats, no plasma to clear pinkies quickly, none of it.

I'll try for an E3 run soon, then an E4 run after.

The Cyberdemon has 4000hp. 100 shotgun shells will do an average of 100*7*10 damage if all shots hit. So about 7000 worth of damage. This should be a fairly decent margin of error for taking out the cyber. Adjust the route to include getting a backpack and ending e2m7 with 100 shells. New run categories are really only interesting if they force you to take different routes / use different strategies. Even without a backpack, infighting lost souls should make it viable.

Rocket max would be an interesting category. Allow only rocket launcher and fists, not even chainsaw.

Personally I tend to prefer "weird" categories for multiple maps only. The exception being tyson. It's incredibly boring no matter how you do it. Respawn is kinda meh too.

For Doom2, I think a single and double shotty run would be cool and interesting. Limited only to shotgun weapons. I think that way, the run would be much more fluid and fast.

 

But cool idea though.

Very late reply but already done it :P. Episode 3 was where the hell was. Fuck Limbo. I don't advice anyone to try it though, The pistol is really shit, vulnerable to RNG and the armies of pinkies are bullet sponges that can lock you down to death. Episode 4 and doom2 is really going to be hell on earth with chaingunners and pain elementals around.

 

On-Topic: Don't think SG doom 1 or SSG doom2 are that challenging. The maps DROWN the player in shells so maxing them isn't that much of a problem. Adding nightmare will just make it extremely bullshit since some rooms need BFGing or they are luck fiestas and nightmare is already too hard for the majority of players.
