Der Oberscuetze Posted July 5, 2018 Am I the only one who wants to play DooM splitscreen? I think at least running through SnapMaps with a friend would be cool. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

NieMaMordy Posted July 30, 2018 splitscreen is dead because players nowadays would not let developers live, if they noticed that their top tier 30fps games drop to unplayable and unacceptable 29 fps per second. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
wheresthebeef Posted July 30, 2018 (edited) All the split screen/couch coop games are pretty much entirely made by Indie developers since they have shown to not matter in a AAA property. There's the exceptions of course, but split screen has been abandoned by the bigger publishers. And then there's the games that had no excuse, like the recent ports of Duke 3D (both the 3DRealms made 360 port and the Gearbox World Tour) which don't have split screen yet the N64 port from the 90s had four player split. The Doom and Doom II ports, however, allowed split screen and were greatly appreciated by me. And then there's the super rare PC Split screen games, like Serious Sam where it's always existed or Left 4 Dead (which has to be activated via console commands). The Build engine is a gigantic mess which can't simply just have splitscreen added. How the N64 version ever got it remains a mystery for the ages, to the extent that I strongly suspect most of its engine was rewritten in the first place due to its initial over-reliance of X86 assembly. Doom's splitscreen wasn't really splitscreen at all, it was the engine instanced 4 different times and running a network game as an interop between each instance. If just split screen: All PS2 games Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect both are highly recommended Darkwatch has split screen coop exclusively on PS2 The Warriors, it is split screen when you are far away from eachother but forms into one screen when you are near eachother (this can also be turned off IIRC) 007 Everything or Nothing has a split screen coop campaign Half-Life has a split screen coop campaign (which was later recreated on PC by fans) There's also Serious Sam The Next Encounter which is a console exclusive SS game and has split screen coop, though it's a little meh. I'd recommend all of these, especially the Timesplitters series and The Warriors Edited July 31, 2018 by wheresthebeef 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
