Steve D Posted August 2, 2018 Surprisingly enough, being an old-timer, I'm in the same boat as @Capellan. I've never played Plutonia. Indeed, I was hoping to get it in the DWMC to see what all the fuss was about. I just finished a practice run of the first 4 maps, and let me say that when it comes to Final Doom, I am now on Team Plutonia. These maps, in terms of layout, appearance, and encounter design, are IMO in a completely different category from Evilution. Such fun! I like it so much, I'm going to play the whole thing after I die on my Ironman run. Based on what I've seen so far, the first 4 maps are survivable if I get enough practice. I'll have an idea how far I can go after playing the next few maps. My main goal is always to survive Map01. It's inconceivable that I could survive the whole mapset or even a full episode given all the super-nasty traps, but I'll push it as far as I can. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Breezeep Posted August 3, 2018 Died on MAP08. Not too rusty. It's been a while since I did an Ironman run, so I must admit, It's better than my last attempt! bre_plut_ironman.zip 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

That was just me bitching about my own weakness, happens every now and then. It's just that I was unable to accept the fact that after all this time I'm apparently still dying in the very same areas. I think I had plenty of health if memory doesn't fail me, but none of that mattered when I got cornered by the Cacos and the Revenants laughed at me from the other side while they were blowing me up :v . 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kristian Nebula Posted August 3, 2018 (edited) I also made it to map04, and died a silly death from a baron fireball. Oh well :D EDIT: yeah, categoria 2-2,5 I guess. I played Plutonia through once early this year, for the first time after 2000 I think :D ka_pluto.zip Edited August 4, 2018 by Kristian Nebula 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted August 3, 2018 damn.....Plutonia is taking so many marines here.... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deadwing Posted August 3, 2018 I'll try this, although I'm sure I'll die in that bridge of death on map 02 >.< 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

No one has practiced to even one hundredth the extent that you have Plutonia any of the previous selections, at least! More boring prattle on this subject can be found in the Oscillation Ironman thread, when the scheme was introduced. Also holy shit. Well that's even slow for his standard, seeing his plutonia record at 19.58 at dsda. Anyway there's a huge difference between an unprepared run and one with map knowledge, never mind such perfect preparation. I notice that every time I play a new map and killed laughably due to not knowing where to go (I dread those maps that reveal more enemies at every step I make to get rid of those I just awakened), and later runs that can be easy in comparison. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Big Ol Billy Posted August 3, 2018 I also haven’t actually played Plutonia (other than peeking at a few maps once and a while). I admire the aesthetics of the stereotypical vision I have in my head—jungle-themed IWAD-tough maps with dickish chaingunner placement—though we’ll see how true that really is. Looking forward to this, though I suspect my chances of survival are gonna be even slimmer than usual. This will hopefully be a good chance to (non-Ironman) play through the whole set at last. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

(Probably a dumbass question but I want to clarify before running into this) FYI, the choc option "-gameversion final" is equivalent to "-complevel 4". I'll also just throw in here that the Casalis themselves designed Plutonia as just a pwad to be played with Doom2. The teleport bug was a cock-up at the id end. KVELLER Posted August 3, 2018 Hey, this looks interesting! I've played Plutonia a couple times, but not enough to know all the maps from memory or anything, so it'll be cool to see how far I can get. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted August 4, 2018 oh... i thought there were candles or something marking the bridge, but that must've been a different bridge later in the set. woops DEAD: MAP02 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted August 4, 2018 that bridge is fucking deadly man..... 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Aquila Chrysaetos Posted August 4, 2018 Wow, that same bridge is killing a lot of people. I don't think I realized just how dangerous it actually is. I seemed to breeze through it on my run. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SilverIce Posted August 4, 2018 Add another Soul to that Well. Category 2 run, though I'll admit I haven't played Plutonia since we did it on Nightmare for TNS. I honestly thought I'd at least get to the inviso-bridge on Aztec. :/ icypluto.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Anima Zero Posted August 4, 2018 So many people dying at that bridge, heh. Can't wait to see what kind of obituaries crop up from Alfonzo for that one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Steve D Posted August 4, 2018 Slaughter on the 02 Bridge! Been watching the demos. It's one of the places where I died on my practice run, though I made it on my second try. But there are no second tries in Ironman! Here's hoping it wasn't some lucky shooting that got me through, and that I can repeat my performance, because otherwise, it's hard to recover from something bad happening here. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Nasty trap that one, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kristian Nebula Posted August 4, 2018 Shooting at the weird computer console screen on the left from the entrance to the bridge area reveals the pillars showing the bridge, just in case somebody didn't know :) 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tristan Posted August 4, 2018 (edited) It's been a while since I played Plutonia. Guess who went to that fucking bridge on map 2 and forgot the red key? ME! Be sensible with your rockets folks and use them where it matters, such as that fucking bridge on map 2 because if those revenants aren't dealt with immediately, there could be trouble. Foreknowledge + explosions also triumphs in MAP03, where it's a quick solution to the first archvile (I finally broke my habit of going for the red key first), and other situations like assaulting the chaingunners by the invisible bridge. I died at the blue key in MAP04. This was stupid, I fucked up past the yellow door and yolo'd it from there, and then got somewhat disorientated and went full dumbass. From previous experience with Plutonia I know I could get to MAP07, but I cleared MAP02 and 03 so I can't complain, just glad to do better than I expected for a change ^_^ Category 2. EDIT: I've just realised I completely forgot about playing with the Plutonia MIDI Pack. Considering I fucking worked on it, my death truly was fully deserved. Dragonfly Posted August 4, 2018 Why Plutonia? Whyyyy? Plutonia, in my opinion at least, is so janky and unpleasant to play. I expect I'll die somewhere between map01 - map03. We'll see though. I'll couple my ironman stream with some other content because I know this one will be a short one, heh. I'll be likely to do my run on Wednesday the 15th August. As for the Britbowl standings, here's an update! Mutt still leads with 4 wins, but with last month's victory going in my favour, I am still left with a chance to compete against Mutt. Those who're on "Team John" are in for an ambitious 5 months, good luck! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted August 4, 2018 @Eris Falling Noice, you made it past the nightmare bridge after all :) . Oh well, it still hurts that I failed there but shit happens. Maybe I'll do better next month, but considering this was Plutonia and I died so early on, that's highly unlikely :v . 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted August 4, 2018 I'll clear that dreaded bridge and I know how to do it. It's easier than you think really...it's time that I do my run for this wad. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted August 4, 2018 Would be kinda ironic if you'd die there :P Nonetheless, good luck on your run, mate! As the BSBowl is 3-3 so far, any of us can take the lead. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted August 4, 2018 I found it funny that the PSX version of Onslaught (map 10 in PC) has a cybie instead of the chaingunner/archie combo...which can be harder depending of player's approach. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
