Well, since your search query seems rather "broad", there's this "top rated" category in idgames. That might be a good place to start. Just download a bunch of top rated wads and try them out for yourself.

I think this should be a sticky because it comes up multiple times per month. (Examples found in 10 minutes with my scrollwheel: 1 2 3 4 5). Of course the answers given would be broad; someone could still start a thread about E2-themed slaughter minisodes with Halo-style shields and TNT textures.

 

Best Doom mods is a very common search term on the wiki, also, though our current article is only a beginning.

Yeah, might be a good idea to combine everything into one thread and maybe sort it into stuff like "vanilla compatible", "weapons mods", "terrywads", "megawads", "slaughtermaps", etc.
