What's Wrong With Having More Ammo?

It's said that the BFG Edition of Doom 3 gives you more ammo than in the original game, and there are those that think it's a bad thing. What's wrong with having more ammunition? Doesn't it make the game more fun? More like classic Doom?

No it doesn't, nor does it make it more akin to classic Doom.

 

More ammo without making other changes to the actual gameplay mechanics, AI, or levels to make things more interesting or difficult just pointlessly trivializes the whole experience. There was plenty of ammo in the original, there's really no reason to have even more.

I do think id should have made the enemies harder to compensate for the extra ammo they added.

Have you played the game? the 2004 edition that is? even on Veteran there's simply way too much ammo, I have been replaying the game for the last 3 days and have reached Monorail Chapter and I have way too much ammo, and the enemies are as tough as they could be, especially the hitscanners, yeah I die a lot but not because of the ammo. It feels perfectly balanced I never ran out of ammo in the wrong time.

(I guess what I'm trying to say is, having more ammo completely takes out any tension the game might've had)

Making it more like classic Doom would've meant reworking enemy spawns so there's more in levels, getting rid of the idle growl animation when they spawn so you can't just run up to them and instakill them with the shotgun and also making it so the first half of the game isn't so reliant on imps as the default enemy type you fight. Of course, doing all these things would've actually taken effort and the BFG Edition was a rush job made while id was in panic mode as the original Doom 4 concept was collapsing around them and their future as a studio was uncertain.

Original is best version of game. When you have to switch between flashlight and weapon, it's damn tough game and cool experience. I played it with default gamma setting BTW.

BFG Edition is made for newbies. It's brighter in general + flashlight is integrated into armor LOL.

It's also a video game, a horror oriented shooter that is.

 

Having to switch to the flashlight in order to see anything in dark areas while also being busy killing demons added more difficulty to the game and tension. Whether that was a good thing or not largely depends on who you ask I guess, but, IMO, for the vision behind the original game it made much more sense than what BFG Edition did. BFG Edition was a move in the opposite direction with all the changes it did, and they didn't do much justice to the original and its philosophy.

If you want everything future can offer, then robots can take care of demons, so Doomguy can farm potatoes.

What you need to understand is that ammo quantity can be one of the BIGGEST adjustments to difficulty beyond simple monster count. If you have ample amount of ammo, you dont need to be afraid to use your bigger weapons to kill some weaker monsters. Whereas if your ammo is more limited, you need to make your shots count, you cant afford to be wasting rockets on basic enemies, or bullets on enemies that are designed to take hundreds, when you can use a more powerful weapon.

 

Its all about difficulty. People want to be challenged, not given a walk in the park, and unfortunately the BFG edition does add a bit too much ammo, but it is my belief that the bfg edition was designed for people that weren't used to doom.

I often catch myself conserving ammo of the bigger weapons to the extreme even if there is an abundance of ammo. That might be one of the reasons why I hate it when some games (like Half-Life) take them away at some point.

it's no fun to play a game where you never, ever have to think about ammo, isn't it? Just pick the best weapon for the job at all times and blast away. Sounds fun, right? Not ever having to think about weapon choices, knowing you might need ammo for later, or things like that. Doom 3 already had way too much ammo, so this is just heeeh...

I didn't mean to say that not having to think about ammo is a good thing. I thought there wouldn't be enough ammo with how Doom 3 is different from Doom 1 and 2, the game playing in its own way.

So, at the end of the day you didn't play the game by yourself?

 

The answer is short and simple mate, Doom 3 had plenty of ammo, and what BFG Edition did was bring the quantity to excessive levels.
