Happy Halloween everybody. Unfamiliar Episodes Redux is now finished and ready to play and as a special bonus I've thrown in a new E3M1 as an extra treat.

So after what feels like an eternity working on other projects I've returned to my old friend and resumed work on Episode III. After E3M3 is done I'll be releasing the first three maps for playtesting on my Discord server.

Damn, as usual those new screenshots look absolutely amazing! I'm so pumped to play this when it comes out. It's going to take me over a week or more to get through it though because, I'll probably kill everything in each level then go back through and take my time looking at everything closely.

E3M9 - The Bastille of Corruption

 

Episode III is almost ready to go. Some final testing and bug fixing is all that's needed and then Episode III along with updated episodes I and II will be released.

Well after 6-7 months of work, I present to you Unfamiliar Episode III: Circles of Hell.

 

Along with 9 new maps practically made from scratch (very little of the original maps remain in any form), there have been updates to Episodes I and II to bring them further into the new style.

 

As always, play in GZDoom with dynamic lights enabled and the sector light mode changed to Doom or Dark for the best experience.

Episode III was developed with 4.6, but I'd imagine you could run it with any of the last few iterations.

I tried the new maps and they're gorgeous, but... WTF is with those random crushers? I died mostly to them, not monsters. Annoying beyond belief, I actually quit playing in E3M9 because of them. Anyway, there are some bugs:

 

E3M3: player can become stuck in green armor secret in the elevator shaft.

 

E3M6: player can become stuck in pit around exit.

So I have been keeping tabs on bug reports and I intend to release a patch after enough have piled up. I've been fixing them more or less ASAP after getting the news so its just a matter of finding a time when there's a thorough and worthwhile amount of fixes, instead of having to constantly recompile the build and reset the download links when someone finds one elevator linedef i forgot to set to repeatable action or something like that.

I've fixed every bug and minor mapping error that has been brought to my attention, plus reduced the amount of crusher traps. The crushers were there mainly to instill a sense of anxiety and convey an atmosphere of cruelty - this is Hell after all - but clearly it hasn't gone down too well with players.

As an added bonus, here's some trivia: The blue lava that appears in some maps was based on a real-world phenomenon involving the combustion of sulfur called "Api Biru".

Hi there!

Just wanted to drop a note about the balance-on the lowest difficulty setting, I think it could do with some rebalancing. I'd started on second difficulty and there's almost no health in it, then when dropping down to lowest difficulty there's megaspheres in almost every room and half the fights are missing, which makes unfortunately makes it a lot less fun. Otherwise this looks nice, I'd like to play more of it.

Unfamiliar is wrapping up.

 

Instead of producing an Unfamiliarized version of Thy Flesh Consumed, I've instead decided to bring things to a close by doubling down on polishing the content already made and adding a short two-map bonus episode to take Episode IV's place.The bonus episode in question is a revamped version of Everglade, a side wad in production around the same time as Episode I Redux and fell under the radar. You could consider it to be a mini-expansion since it inherited some of the custom assets I was also using for Unfamiliar at the time.

I think it was mainly a growing feeling of disenfranchisement with the project. Plus I was never that interested in TFC to begin with (to me it feels like more of the same content tacked on as an afterthought that undermines the hype for Doom 2 built up by Inferno's ending) and I wasn't really sure of how to Unfamiliarize it since it doesn't really have that much of an identity of its own outside of the orange sky and higher difficulty.

 

I've been planning to finish up work on my Doom projects this year anyway and move on to other stuff, so it would be the more pragmatic choice to finish Unfamiliar at an acceptable point in its lifetime (i.e. containing at least the three main episodes) rather than go through the messy process of doing another episode. Circles of Hell was a bit of a nightmare behind the scenes and I think at this point I don't have the motivation to go through something similar - or worse - in order to top it. I wouldn't say I'm "giving up" as much as bringing things to a close at a point that I'm satisfied with. Sorry if there's any disappointment.
