I also remember a cartoon, in which a barbarian type had 2 friends with him named Ariel and Ookla with really strange mounts instead of horses, and Ookla was obviously not human.  Sometime during each episode, he would call out "Ariel, Ookla, ride!".  Was that this same cartoon?  If not, does anybody remember which cartoon it was?

I'd love it... terrible or not. The original Mario cartoon was terrible then and terrible now, but most people still love it.

 

I imagine a 90s Doom cartoon to be more like GI Joe. With different Doomguys having different uniforms, personalities, laser weapons and so on. The shame is GI Joe died for a lot of people before the 90s once Nickelodeon took over and the rise of "relatable idiocy" took over in place of badass of the early 90s and 80s.

 

If only Doom was popular enough to get a cartoon show and TV show.

That's a good point.  Before the cartoon, GI Joe was a single character.  I had one, or a knock-off, when i was a kid in the 70s.

DOOM is an American animated television series created by Universal Cartoon Studios for MCA TV's Universal Family Network syndicated programming block as a response to the popularity of the computer game Doom and the rising popularity of anime.

 

The show follows Inferno Team, a group of marines and scientists from earth, on their missions all over the alien prison planet Inferno, where they have become trapped after a dimensional teleporter malfunction. Throughout the first season, Inferno Team balance their attempts to find a way back home while also stopping the demonic inhabitants from invading earth.

 

The series adopted an unusually gritty tone for a children’s show, and ran for 12 episodes in 1994. It was canceled partway through Season 1 due to parental complaints about the violence and demonic elements. It was not uncommon for characters both human and alien to be killed onscreen or off, and many of the aliens -- particularly the possessed humans -- were considered too frightening for children’s programming. Reruns later aired on USA Network.

 

A second season, taking place on earth during demon occupation, was planned, but never produced.

 

 

CAST

INFERNO TEAM

“Sarge”

The main protagonist, and the original test subject of the UAC’s teleporter project. Once thought lost to time and space, he has actually been living off the land of Inferno for some time, and is an encyclopedia of information on the planet’s environment and inhabitants. He encounters Inferno Team in the pilot episode, and agrees to help them with their mission.

 

Major Brandon White Hawk - “Chief”.

Leader of Inferno Team, a hulking Blackfoot Indian and experienced military commander. He is devoted to protecting his troops and often butts heads with Sarge over the team’s plans. He doesn’t trust Sarge and believes him to be a demon in disguise.

 

Dr. Michelle Parker - “Slim”

A UAC scientist sent to record the team’s excursion. Though out of her element in a military setting, she manages to hold her own. It is later revealed that she has secret orders to recover demonic artifacts from Inferno.

 

Dr. Joss Olsen - “Viking”

A medic and experienced hunter. He’s a bit on the “mad” side of science, and is frequently at odds with Sarge and Chief when his medical experiments on the local animal and plant life get out of hand.

 

Maxine Barrett - “Mad Max”

The temperamental and slightly crazy designated marksman of the team, who also serves as mechanic to Calvin and Hobbes. Her inability to look before she leaps often gets the team into trouble. She quickly develops a crush on Sarge, though she never admits it.

 

Calvin and Hobbes

Inferno Team drives a pair of armored rovers equipped with heavy weaponry and state of the art AI, which can also talk to the team members. Hobbes is the more stoic and logical of the two; Calvin is a newer AI and is prone to malfunctions due to his lack of testing, sometimes causing him to switch personalities at inopportune moments.

 

Pinky

A quadrupedal demon that falls somewhere between dog and bull, which Sarge befriended and keeps as a pet. He behaves like the family dog and is fiercely protective of the team, though frequently gets in trouble for destroying equipment or stealing food.

 

 

DEMONS

Mastermind

A bloated, brain-like blob with incredible telepathic powers. She is one of several demon chieftains in Inferno, and the most ambitious: after acquiring advanced human tech, she has begun outfitting her legions with hi-tech weapons for a total conquest of Inferno, and eventually earth if she gets her hands on the UAC’s teleporter tech. Unable to move on her own, Mastermind must use a variety of cybernetic legs, appendages, and vehicles to move around, usually favoring a six-legged spider-like chariot.

 

Archvile

Mastermind’s right hand man and advisor, a scheming fiend who would love to overthrow his master and take control of her legions, though he is always subservient to her face. He is the point man and driving force behind all of Mastermind's plans.

 

Phobos and Deimos

Mastermind’s chief enforcers, the two most cunning of the minotaur-like Hell Barons who lead her legions. Deimos is a bully and braggart who solves problems with brute force; Phobos by contrast is cagey and manipulative. Both are frequently at odds with one-another, trying to win favor with Mastermind at the other’s expense.

 

Cyberdemon

Mastermind’s ultimate weapon, which Inferno Team has frequent run-ins with. No matter how many times they destroy it, she always rebuilds it, always adding newer, bigger weapons to its modular arsenal.

There's also the obligatory attempt at a somber episode every show has: one about a revenant, deluded into thinking he was once human and outcast by the other demons, attempting to join the heroes only to have his dreams crushed. He then sacrifices himself at a pivotal moment to save Inferno Team. The episode ends with Chief saying: 

 

"He may have been a demon, but he was more human than most humans."

 

There were plans to bring him back for the second season, but they never came to fruition.

I love this. Naturally revenants don't talk, so he has to pantomime the whole episode. And the real kicker is right at the end, when they find a photo or something that proves he really was human at one point.

 

And let's not forget that notorious episode where Chief and a Hell Baron accidentally go through a teleporter together and come out as a hideous hybrid abomination, and Inferno Team has to find a way to reverse the process to separate them again.

Thundarr rings a bell.  That is probably the one I am thinking about.

 

I also remember a cartoon in which the hero had the Star Sword and the villain had the basically-identical Power Sword, and if those two got combined, they would form the even-more-powerful Power Star.  That might also be Thundarr, or it could be yet another cartoon.

That sounds like the original story for He-Man as portrayed in the comics that came with the action figures. I'm not sure if it was used in a cartoon.

Cartoon series are awesome, especially if they allow violence and death (otherwise it can't be Doom if it's too harmless).

 

But the only rule I expect of a Doom universe is that demons exist, they often manifest themselves violently (but not necessarily so), and there's a way to stop them (albeit painful and with many losses). Whether angels also exist is debatable; it would be interesting for them to exist, to add a new dimension. It would be a science-fiction/horror/religious kind of story.

 

It doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the Doom game stories: demons spawn on Mars, everyone but the player dies, player survives and defeats all odds. That's just a gameplay mechanic to nerf them to be manageable. In a believeable story it would be many-against-many.

I did what I should have done in the first place and used Google.  The cartoon with the Star Sword and Power Sword was Blackstar, which only lasted 13 episodes, but I liked it.

 

A Doom cartoon could potentially have been awesome, but also potentially awful.  I would probably have had fond memories of even the awful version.

That episode was pretty neat. The whole fight-for-control dynamic was interesting and you got to see demon magic turned on mobs of Imps. Nice and satisfying.

 

As far as demon episodes go, the one with Private John Stalvern was the best. Felt most like the original Doom to me (what with him being a generic Marine alone in the corridors) and it was interesting seeing a possessed soldier's perspective when for the most part they were disposable goons that Inferno Team cut down without a second thought.

The Dead Space films are pretty close. I really wish the money thats being wasted on the nu-DooM movie was going towards an animated series.

 

A DOOM Anime would work just as well if not better, check out the final episode of Berserk.
