This question will probably reveal that I haven't played doom in any depth for about the last 5-6 years.
What is boom and where can I get some?

Boom is a source port made by Team TNT. It allows new features, bigger editing limits, and much more. If you want to play the Win32 port, go to http://prboom.sourceforge.net.

One of the ports there is close to vanilla doom (old dos doom 1/2)

It's okay man you and I are in the same boat...I just re-discovered Doom myself, there's so much here...really cool stuff man
